how much are first gen ps3's worth? I have a MGS bundle PS3 with BC 4 usb and card reader. Never had any problems with it, but i dont need all that jazz. How much could I get for it?

Yours is not a first gen. Yours is a second gen with ~80% backwards compatibility. First gen consoles are just about fully backwards compatible (~99%). That being said, not sure how much yours will go for.

I have an 80 GB with software emu, and I haven't found a PS2 game that won't play. I think they upped the compatablility % in some of the initial patches.

I've never understood why the hardware emu is 99% instead of 100%.

Probably just for shit happens. Claming 100% compatibility would likely end up with idiots screaming false advertisement if a certain game didn't work.

Probably because it uses the chips from a PS2 Slim, and the 99% is compatibility with the original PS2 hardware. I think there are a tiny number of games that won't play on a PS2 Slim either.

Anyway: blu-ray player + game console hardware + hard drive for under $100? Keep dreaming OP.

The 360 - 4GB with just flash memory and a $5 DVD drive is still $200. Plus $40/year for Live of course if you want online gaming or Netflix.

Hmm.. I have an original release phat PS3 in great nick. Hardly gets used beyond playing blu-rays. Should unload for a profit and buy a slim.

If that's all you do with it, couldn't hurt. I love my PS3 and haven't touched my 360 in about a year, my Wii since November (Zelda). My PS3 has been used quite a bit.

Lets not forget that the PS3 is a pretty decent Blu-Ray player as well. The Slim can bitstream TrueHD and DTS-HD, loads fast...all the network features, 3D too(although I have never used it and compared to a stand alone people tell me that the PS3's 3D output is not quite the same quality due to no HDMI 1.4 spec).

Are you 15 years old? If you think $200 for a console, not to mention a console with a built in BD player, is expensive, you are out of touch. The thing was $599 when it was released.

With your budget, I recommend you pick up a board game like Monopoly. It's $13 at Amazon now.

You're crazy and no offense but if $200 is expensive then you need a new hobby other than video games.

Awesome guys, then if 200$ is such a paultry sum please send me that amount via paypal so i can buy one and become a dick too :)

I don't think they were being dicks at all. The value of what you get for the cost is pretty good. Like countless people have said, the fact that it comes with a good Blu-Ray Player in it plus the fact that it streams videos and music and plays games makes it well worth the cost. Add in the fact that the online is free, or if you decide to get PS+, you actually get free games and stuff like that.

I don't expect to get a Ferrari for $1000. Is $1000 a lot of money? Yes. Is it for a Ferrari? No. $1000 is giving the car away.

I think you know the difference. You just want to get something for nothing. So to make a long story short, yes, you are being COMPLETELY unrealistic. Sony is not going to give away their hardware because you REALLY want a PS3. Sorry. If you want a PS3 for <$100, wait until Sony releases their next console.

Lol like I said dude there are other hobbies. Video games have never been cheap. Remember what the SNES cost? The games were $65 sometimes. Plus there's more than one console so if you want Uncharted you need PS3, Gears of War and Halo need 360, need Mario gotta buy a Wii. You know what I'm saying? Not everyone can afford to be a gamer. You seem to have yourself a good PC, you could easily use that for gaming no? I know you won't have some of the console exclusives but...

Also, yeah $200 isn't that much when you think about the years of service it got. I paid $400 for mine back 4-5 years ago and in that time I've had countless hours of entertainment. I can't say the same for my other hobby. When I buy a firearm the price starts at $500 and rockets up above $1000+ depending on what I want. Then ammo, cleaning supplies, range time. At least at $60 per game you keep the game until you don't want it. I buy a $30 box of ammo and 30minutes later I have an empty box to throw out lol. So Video gaming isn't that expensive when you compare it to something else.

The first response in the thread answered it well without denigrating the OP.

I'll help the OP. If $100 is your price range, Amazon has the PS2 available for that price. Pick one up and enjoy it for the next five years so by that time you can get a PS3 for $100.

I don't think the originals sell for very much now a days, they are ticking time bombs. Back when I sold mine for a newer model, I got $500, now they are like $200 on ebay. You are better off buying a PS3 slim and a used PS2.

Yes, $200 is expensive. Why? Because while you guys say it's a good deal, how it's a media player, blu-ray player, blah blah blah... To me, it's just a piece of hardware required to play Gran Turismo 5, the only game I'd ever play on it. Don't believe me? I have an Xbox 360; the only games I own are all the Forza games.

Spending $200 to play a $50 game is very expensive.

Yes, it is, so obviously it's not for you. Just because YOU only want to play one game on it, does not mean that $200 is a lot for what you get from the ps3.

My PS3 was probably some of the best money I've ever spent in terms of dollars per hour entertainment. By far.

Did you post a thread complaining about the 360's cost? It's still $200 without a hard drive or blu-ray player or any other blah-balh.

And if you play Forza online you're spending an extra $40+ a year for that bit o' blah.

You can find first gen 360's for $80-$100 with no frills. And no, I don't play online.

I guess the PS3 is simply just expensive. Oh well.

I snagged a lightly used PS3 slim from cowboom.com for $140. They don't advertise when they get really low priced stock so you have to check the site every day for deals.

Get nearly all my in-home entertainment through the PS3...and I rarely game on it. Between streaming netflix, hulu +, and blu-ray, I'm set for a good long time. Best investment I've made.

So you just want it to be under $200 so you can play one game? It looks like you need to find something else to complain about.

Sounds like you need to expand your horizons

I used to be all about gaming. It's all just boring to me now, except for racing sims. Love them. I want more... I've thoroughly beaten all the Forza games, so now it's time to jump back to Gran Turismo. The last one I played was 3, but I never owned it, so I never really "beat" it. While I'm sure GT4 was a great game when it came out, it doesn't hold a candle to the modern stuff out there. Otherwise, I'd just get a PS2 and start there for the time being.

I guess the conflict here is that most of you have a gamer mentality, while I do not. I have one game on my iPhone that I rarely play (Bejeweled 2) and just play the Forza games from time to time.

Flaming me for thinking $200 for a bare console is too much is short-sighted. For someone simply looking to play a game, the PS3 seems a bit expensive. The used market seems to average around $200. Most of the PS3's I see under that price are broken.

Is my claim SO outlandish that it warrants flame? I mean, Best Buy sells refurbished 80gb PS3's for $160 when they have them in stock. These units come with warranties and will play PS3 games just fine. So why are the *same*, ~4 year old non-refurbished, thoroughly used systems going for about $200 on the used market? It just doesn't make sense to me. You can also buy a brand new 160 gb model for just $50 more, with a full warranty.

So really... is there something I missed about the PS3's resale value? For example, some iPhones resell for more money than others just because they're unlockable. I've seen fully working Xbox 360's go for $50 just because they're banned from Xbox Live. I find it hard to believe that backwards compatibility stops the console from depreciating in value past $200...

Just because your perceived value of the PS3 is vastly lower than the typical gamer's, it doesn't mean you're missing something about the resale value. Resale value is determined by initial cost and current demand. None of its other features or games appeal to you, simple as that. I would agree that paying $200 is a lot if you only plan on playing one game. But paying $200+ isn't that much at all if you plan on using it to its full potential.

Also, I will add that Forza 4 is largely considered to be better than GT5. I believe every Forza 4 review I've read made mention that it was better than GT5. So if you've already beat Forza 4, seems like you could skip GT5 altogether and save yourself some money.
