Why are PS3's still so damn expensive?

The console's almost 5 years old, yet it's still hard to find one under 200 bucks. Am I missing something? I'm trying to find one under $100. Am I crazy, or is this realistic?

While it may be 5 years old, I think it comes down to business 101, if a consumer will spend $200 on your product why would you sell it for only $100? I don't think you'll find it under $100 until the PS4 shows up and you go looking for used ones at game stop.

You're crazy and no offense but if $200 is expensive then you need a new hobby other than video games.

Crazy. Blu-ray playback will keep it up in price if nothing else.

Are you 15 years old? If you think $200 for a console, not to mention a console with a built in BD player, is expensive, you are out of touch. The thing was $599 when it was released.

With your budget, I recommend you pick up a board game like Monopoly. It's $13 at Amazon now.

Sure, why COULDN'T you expect to pick up a Blu-ray player + streaming media player + DVD player + gaming console + internet media device for a hundred bucks?

I'm with the OP. $200.00 is a lot of money for most people, me included, and I think at this point in the ball game one should be able to find an old, first gen PS3 for around $100-$150 tops with worn controller.

It's just not going to happen.

You can find them used in the $160 range. Not really worth it though, IMHO. Most people don't take care of their shit, at all. I used to work at an indy game store, and whenever people would sell us their consoles, we'd almost always have to clean them up really well. Dust buildup, dirt caked on, stains everywhere. Every. Time. No way would I pay $160 for a system that's been taken care of like that. Plus, given the lifespan of current consoles, buying a used (especially first gen) console is almost asking for trouble.

Like I said, new hobby. Video gaming is not that cheap.

I think Blu-Ray and the hard drive justify the cost of the PS3, certainly over the Xbox. If they had a version without those features I could see $100 being more reasonable. But, you couldn't get rid of the Blu-Ray drive, since it's needed for games anyway.

if you buy a blu ray player with wifi and netflix features you're looking at around $200

then you fail.

first gen ps3's are worth more than the new ones since they have backwards compatibility.

Just a quality Blu-Ray Player alone is worth at least $80. Add gaming capabilities obviously, peripherals, music streaming, movie streaming, PSN & new crap they've added since I touched mine and you got a device worth at least $300.

Considering I've easily put over 1200hrs into the damn thing, I'm glad to have paid $400 for mine and then upgrade to the slim when I did.

Throw in the games I've purchased and the great times I've had with friends all for 80c/hour ? Hard to find elsewhere.

I got a brand new one with move camera, a game, 1 controller, 1 move controller and 320gb hdd for $250+tax and thought that was a steal. Everyone's buy in is different.

I bought my 360 and didn't even have games for awhile. Just used it as a streaming media device. Considering how much the PS3 can do like said earlier, bluray, media streaming, internet browsing, music video and picture playback, videogame playback, netflix, hulu etc, you're lucky to find it at the prices it's at now. It's so multifunctional I've thought of buying one even though I own a 360. In fact, my family owns 5 of them because of their versatility of use.

I have no use for a PS3 as I have a blueray player in my htpc and an xbox 360 and gaming pc. I don't get how first gen Xboxes are basically given away now while the games on them are still a blast to play and they are easy to mod, while the ps3 is still pretty expensive.

1) Just because a Blu-ray player has no value today, doesn't mean it has no value.

2) See all previous points as to why PS3 > OG Xbox.

Bout Tree Fiddy.

Honestly though, check ebay/CL to get a ball park figure. It's probably going to go for a decent chunk of change if it's in good condition.
