I've driven cars ever since getting my license and never had much desire for a truck. After driving a U-haul 1500 miles though, I can see why people buy them even if they never haul anything. Being able to drive from a higher position than most people on the road is nice. I felt much safer driving something big and tall than I did driving the numerous econo boxes I've owned.

Granted a normal pickup isn't as big as a 26' U-Haul, but the principal is the same.

But why would you buy a two seater pickup truck when you could just get a 4x4 like a landrover... With 5 seats...

Maybe the truck owners have no need to haul more than two people? Maybe people can't afford an expensive SUV? Maybe they like the ability to haul things on occasion that wouldn't work very well in the back of an SUV?

There are lots of reasons I'm sure. Just comes down to personal taste. I would never in my life drive a pink Cadillac but I say more power to the people who like them. It's their choice.

" I can't afford it, so I'm going to mock it" pretty much sums up every post in this thread.

I have more chrome invested on my Harley than most people have in their savings account. The only reason you will put me down is because you are jealous !!!

And you probably spend more time polishing than riding it.

You asked why people want a Pickup. I showed you a reason. Some people do use them for stuff like in the photos I posted. Around here people hunt. They take their stuff in the truck. And usually an ATV is back there. Or at least on a trailer. Or even one ATV in the bed and another on a trailer. Like I said, it depends on the area.

Yeah I get that, there are definately reasons for owning one, I'm not denying that, but in the cities I went I just don't get it...

I'm not your son, and I said there are extreme circumstances when they might be useful, but they are the one of the most popular vehicles in America! Not everyone needs one...

Well there's the disconnect. You assume that a vehicle purchase has to come from a need and not just because a person likes a certain vehicle. If you want to get nit-picky, you don't need the amount of horsepower a London cab provides. You could get away with a lot less. Heck my dad's 13hp Citroen 2CV got me around just fine for a few months when I was car-less.

My cab has about 60bhp, and it's retardedly heavy, 0-60 takes about 27 seconds, trust me I couldn't do with less.

But aside from that, I guess that's true, but I just can't understand the logic behind liking that type of car over others that are far more practical, when you don't need it.

That's where the "want" comes in. Or usually the "I want to show off to everyone" attitude. I've seen it a million times. Guy buys the base model pickup. Then goes to "Rent-a-rim" and puts the biggest chrome wheels he can pay for every month. Just because he thinks it makes him the envy of the whole world. When in reality we're just pointing and laughing.

Oh I see that actually makes a lot of sense, it's a "My car is bigger than your car" thing. We have that here too.

Odd... I can plainly see two instances of chrome on that car without even trying. Chrome strip around the side windows and chrome badge in grille.

Well, I wasn't going to pull chrome colored plastic bits the factory put on the car off of it. It came that way so I left it as is. I didn't add any chrome to it though.

I can live with the small amount of chrome badging on the grill, the trunk lid, and the wheel center caps.

It might seem impractical to you but car purchases aren't always based on practicality. There is almost nothing practical about a AC Cobra but I would love to own one. Same goes for a Veyron or any number of impractical vehicles out there.

By the way, it sounds like your cab is about as slow as my dad's 2CV. Very painful except in school zones. :D

I agree, but those cars both offer something that other cars don't like speed and design and rarity....

Yep, small penis syndrome. Lots of Americans suffer from this it seems.

I don't think that's true, I think they have average size penises but they are so fat that they can't see over their stomachs and can't remember what size they are...

One advantage of a pickup truck is you can throw stuff in the back without worrying about messing up the carpeting or interior trim.

And most pickups can still carry 5-6 people, which is the same as most SUVs. And trust me, you don't want to ride in the third row seat of an SUV that has that option, unless it's something enormous like a Suburban. SUVs are comfortable up front but surprisingly cramped in back.

Yeah that makes sense I suppose, if you want the idea of wash out the back seats- kind of car then yeah.

That's not been my experience in this section. People seem nicer. With you as a possible exception..

most of us hate tacky chrome too. detroit gets their focus groups from detroit, and we all know about people there. so we get chrome. lots of chrome. though the hyundai sonata is about the worst offender from the factory right now. ick.

and most SUVs are pretty small compared to full size trucks and more expensive. 'mid-sized' SUVs used to be called compact because they were based on compact pick ups.
