Digging straight down will only yield small deposits of iron with mostly gravel (flint) and coal. You have to take risks by looking for those deep natural caves (chances of getting lost multiply), use only Stone pick axes as they are cheap and when you find good stuff pull out your steal tools. I've had to make "security rooms" when in caves so I have something to fall back to when i need to store and craft things.

nope, you can always throw up walls to impede their progress. creepers explode if within a few blocks of you, and skeletons can shoot over 1 block but not over 2. spiders can jump over 1 block as well.

So anyone doing any preparations for the Halloween update? I have some coal stored but I'm not sure if I should make a crapload of torches so they get turned into lanterns, seems a bit like cheating. Also I haven't found any obsidian so I won't be able to see Hell right away 🙁

I was also thinking of starting over in a new world, last night when showing the game to a friend it generated a map that is just awesome. But I'm not sure I want to abandon all the stuff I've built in my other save, I'm somewhat attached to it.

The easiest way to make obsidian is to move a watersource into lava. Then wall off the lava and water and mine out the obsidian. Remove the walls around the lava and water, and make more.

You need diamond pick axes to mine the obsidian though, and it takes a long time.

Oh, and just because I haven't seen anyone post it yet: snowballs are a good ranged weapon. Easy to get and plentiful in snowy areas, but are destroyed when used.

i dug so far down that there was just blue space and i fell in it by accident and died and of course i had full inventory again and that was completely lost.
When digging down and hitting bedrock, keep track of how many levels into the bedrock you are. I believe bedrock is the bottom 4 levels (is it 5?), so don't dig under your feet if you're in the last level or two of bedrock in case there is an opening into the void.

I guess there is no way to reset your spawn point in SP? my spawn point was off on some small island with nothing near it so i had to travel a bit to find a decent place. now my compass points to that island and if i die i spawn there.

Unfortunately, no. You may want to build a chest at your spawn point and drop a few basic materials (maybe some stone tools, torches, and a sword) so you're not completely empty handed if you die.

When you are exploring, only take what you absolutely need with you (sword, torches, tools). Leave everything else in an easily findable chest. If you get some nice loot, immediately head back to a chest (or even create one there and drop stuff into it) so you don't lose valuable stuff if you die and can't get back to your corpse in time.

also, what am i doing wrong? I rarely find ores and stuff, even digging down to bedrock. just a few blocks here and there. i read that you find diamonds near lava and have found maybe 6 blocks total. i dig all around the lava and never find any more.
For each kind of ore (including coal), there are two "altitude" limits. The higher of the two is a hard limit -- you won't find *any* ore above that height (with the last layer of bedrock defined as 1, and sea level is 64. The lower of those two limits is where that ore is more frequently spawned. I don't remember those limits off the top of my head, but basically you cannot find anything other than coal above sea level, and diamond is something like 16/12 (i.e. non-existant above 16, rare between 13-16, and uncommon between 1-12).

Note that the frequency of any given ore is constant after you go below that second "level" for that ore. For example, if coal's numbers were 128 and 64, anything below sea level will have an equal chance of finding coal -- the frequency doesn't go up or down the deeper you go.

Also to take into consideration are the fact that ores are found in "veins." Coal veins can be large, often being 4-8 blocks wide in 2 dimensions and 2-4 blocks wide in the other dimension. Note that not all blocks in the vein will be the ore, but it will be substantially ore in that vein. Therefore, if you find a particular ore, make sure you dig around it to make sure you get any neighboring ore.

I believe that iron is a maximum of 4x3x2 and all others are 3x2x2.

My strategy for finding ore is to dig down to bedrock, go up about 4 blocks, and then dig straight caverns (1 wide by 2 high) for a while until I run into lava or get really far away.

Yep this is generally how I do it. Check out a mining guide. Basically once at bedrock, I'll make a 1x2 path for like 20 blocks, then dig 1x2 tunnels perpendicular from that. I space my perpendicular tunnels with 3 blocks in between them. There's no point to do less than 2 and with 3 blocks you could possibly miss ores only in the middle blocks but its unlikely. Also, I don't go straight to the very bottom bedrock. As long as I can see the upper bedrock block every so often on the floor of my tunnels, I keep that height. I want to have a level tunnel.

I've done a ton of mining this way and I find everything but not like huge amounts. Lava is usually a big problem so be fast. I keep dirt and stone around numbers 4-6 in my inventory so I quickly can hit 5 or whatever and place blocks to plug lava flow.

Then sometimes I just use natural caverns and find a lot of stuff that way. Sometimes it feels like it's more effective than mining. I'm doing this in my latest singleplayer world and finding a lot of stuff. My strategy to not get lost (as these caves go on forever it seems) is to place wooden blocks near an exit such that I don't have to go more than a little ways to find a wooden block and know what direction to head in. You can use signs too.

Other times I've come across people's huge manmade caverns where they dig out like a 900 square block cavern (a few blocks high) and mine whatever they see.

I find exploring natural caves a lot better than just digging through the rock. You see a lot more blocks that way increasing your chances of seeing good loot. If you want diamond though you'll probably have to dig because diamond only appears like 10-15 blocks above bedrock and not a lot of caves go down that deep.

I've just completed my giant open pit mine which is about 10W x 12L and goes all the way to bedrock. I build walkways every so many blocks down and there are so many caverns going off here and there I can't even start to explore all of them. Here is a video of this area in my private minecraft server:

Here's a preview PC Gamer tested, including building a portal and travelling to the newly renamed "Slip".

Just an FYI, I've changed the Minecraft server address and for now I'm going to keep it private. If you'd like to log on, shoot me a PM and I'll let you know what it is (If I give it to you, please keep it to yourself, thanks). Thanks.

Are you going to do a server reset after the update, Krakn?

I imagine with the Slip, biomes, and bugfixes, the game is going to change rather dramatically. The old world may become outdated quickly.

I've had a few people ask me that, I'm not sure.

With this new fast travel through hell feature, I hope he optimizes the world save a bit better.

I think that's probably the best way to go. In my post above, I basically listed 3 ways to mine. I think combining methods 1 and 2 seems to be the most efficient. Although carving out a huge man made cavern wouldn't miss anything, it's probably not as efficient.

Though just yesterday in my singleplayer game, I followed a natural cave as low as I could go, then at one point dug 6-8 blocks down to bedrock to do a standard tunnel branch mining. Actually my natural cave mining was much better, including diamond. But like you said, some times natural caves don't quite go far enough down to hit diamond.

Yeah, this is what I do now. When I first started I went to a top of closest mountain, dug all the way down to bedrock, and started branching out. Found very little, and it was too the point where I needed to find diamonds just so I can build diamond picks to find more diamonds. Not very fun, and I was going to quit when I broke into a natural cave system that is so vast and plentiful, I still have not mapped it all out. I actually have the luxury to pass on iron veins now. Anyways, the entrance ended up on the surface like 1/4 mile away from where I initially started. So I would look for caves first.

So I guess we need to find a new official AT server.

halloween patch is out... every site that has the word "minecraft" is overloaded. except for anandtech of course.
FFFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU

I just logged into the game to do some work on my moat before going to a party. Now I want to stay home 🙁

Lulz @ wearing a pumpkin on your head 😀

I also like that there are different tones for vegetation now, looks a little bit more realistic. And the biomes thing makes for more interesting maps. Too bad I can't explore more right now. Those who are playing this evening do not hesitate to report new findings 🙂
