It is actually pretty easy. All you need to do it die. Of course there are consequences to that, but as far as I know it is the only way to do it while keeping with the game mechanics.
Aww damn. I thought there was a way to return to my spawn point with my inventory intact, oh well.

Build a compass (4 iron bars surrounding a piece of redstone ore), dig up to the surface, and then just follow the compass until you get to your spawn.

also, if you're mining far away from home, it's a good idea to carry a crafting table, so you can just create tools as you need them, from the ore that you are mining.

I always carry a few wood blocks. A crafting table can be made with a single wood block, plus sticks and wood planks are easy to make from just a few blocks.

I had a compass, the problem was that I was carrying a small fortune in iron, coal and diamond and I died 4 days of traveling away from my spawn point 🙁

Bringing a crafting table is a good suggestion.

Also, this Halloween costume is pretty cool, though it's missing the balls 😛

You all are going to make me buy this game aren;t you?
Should I try out the web version first? or just commit and buy the alpha?

Might as well try it it. The web version is almost the same game minus monsters. You can also destroy anything with one hit in the classic(web) version as opposed to having to use tools to mine efficiently in the alpha version. There are a few other additions, bug fixes, etc, but the classic version is a good way to get a feel of how the game works so you can see whether you should buy it or not.

Odds are you'll end up buying it, though 🙂

Sorry I haven't been back on the server lately. Been pretty busy, but at least I finished my Tunnel to Spawn (or at least it goes to the castle next to the spawn, since I didn't want to dig through that castle 😉 )

I finished the little rocket too, but my original large rocket project never did get finished.

So what the heck is the lure to this game? I asked about 300 posts ago and still haven't seen my response 😀

It is a completely open game, where you can do just about anything you can imagine. It is like playing with legos, but lifesize blocks instead of little ones. Also it has exploration, interesting areas to find, a need to find resources to survive, and danger from monsters in the dark and unexplored regions.

Godamned DSL modem Qwest gave me originally is flaky as shit, I think it's overheating, have an Actiontek M1000 I want to use instead, but I can't get the bridging to work with it for some reason.

So working on that. Should be be up at the moment, kind of touch and go until I get this modem replaced tho.

Yesterday was not a good day for me. kept getting burned by lava and eventually died when a huge lava spill came down and i couldn't get out. had a full inventory too so everything got destroyed in the lava. then later on i was digging and fell into the void and died.

i dug so far down that there was just blue space and i fell in it by accident and died and of course i had full inventory again and that was completely lost.

I guess there is no way to reset your spawn point in SP? my spawn point was off on some small island with nothing near it so i had to travel a bit to find a decent place. now my compass points to that island and if i die i spawn there.

also, what am i doing wrong? I rarely find ores and stuff, even digging down to bedrock. just a few blocks here and there. i read that you find diamonds near lava and have found maybe 6 blocks total. i dig all around the lava and never find any more.

I usually find a good bit of redstone which is practically worthless.

So is there a trick to mining and finding good stuff?

It's about making your own goals while surviving the night.

It's like playing with legos while being attacked by zombies.

It really is random. Iron is actually more prevalent near the surface than near bedrock, so digging a wide swath on your way down might be a good idea. Diamond is the only really useful material that is found near bedrock (Gold and Redstone are usefull, but only for very speciallized tasks.)

My mining strategy is to dig 2 wide square stair cases straight down until I find a cavern, or iron deposit. It ends up looking like this: (o's are full block stairs, 0's are half block stairs)

oo<<0o0oo
oo<<0o0oo
00........00
oo........oo
00........00
oo........oo
00........00
oo0o0o0oo
oo0o0o0oo

This has been pretty successful in finding stuff in each game I have played. Plus using half steps makes it so I can quickly run up and down my mine (since you don't need to jump at each step).

I've just completed my giant open pit mine which is about 10W x 12L and goes all the way to bedrock. I build walkways every so many blocks down and there are so many caverns going off here and there I can't even start to explore all of them. Here is a video of this area in my private minecraft server:
