IMO EA would be extremely foolish to kill this game. The amount of bad publicity they'd get for trying to kill five years of volunteer programming work would be huge. There's also a chance it'll help EA get some more value out of the Wing Commander franchise.

Not sure if EA really owns it. I am pretty sure that Roberts owns the IP, but Origins developed the game. The only issue is if EA/Origins had an non-expiring contract to distribute games related to that IP.

Edit: Missed that last link while writing it. Looks like EA still and probably means forever, the rights to distribute, WC computer games. They also have to be careful. Roberts can fight for those rights back if he really really wants to. Best not to make a big deal about non-monitized fan work.

Much less mission and Story based, and AI is kinda ... not the brightest ... but have you guys played X, X2, X3 Reunion, X3 Terran Conflict, and/or X3 Albion Prelude?

The fleet combat is awesome... I recently got myself a capital ship which can hold 60 fighters, (Colossus) and I loaded it up with 50 M3 and M4 fighters that I had ... Went to battle in a Xenon sector and took out a bunch of Q's and Ps and Ls and Ms ... lost a handfull of my fighters ... but most of em pulled through ....

I tried a bit to get into it and I'm sure it is great once you get into it, but it was too much slow going like Eve. I just want a "hey go out and blast those bastards" game at this point. Don't have the time to explore and build an army.

TBH: EA is not quite the same company it was 5-10 years ago. Amazingly enough, their culture has changed and have become a bit more accepting of things like this... which is a good move because it potentially opens up new markets that they don't have to spend a dime doing demographic/R&D work for. If this gets really popular, expect EA to cash in somehow.

I am addicted to Albion Prelude right now. The Xenon I is my favorite ship at the moment. I have two of them, and I think I will board a third. It is by far the best destroyer in the game.

That said, I am excited about this Wing Commander game.

Installing now, but I won't have much time to try it tonight, going to bed soon. I won't be playing much in any case until I'm done with ME3, but I wanted to give it a quick look.

I played the flight training mission. It has a very retro feel and a few warts, but otherwise, it's extremely impressive for a fan effort. I can't say much more without playing the actual game missions, but it certainly looks promising. However, I have to get a joystick before playing any more of this (and I have to finish ME3 anyway). If you only have a mouse, you have to go into the options and manually enable it, otherwise flying is keyboard only.
