Which is probably why it never got shut down...now that there is new about it...might wanna grab it fast when it comes out :)

Could be fun. I've been itching for a nice blaster space shooter.

Chris Roberts is probably okay with it otherwise he would have said something by now I'm thinking. I hope it is good. Maybe the existing studios will start making space games like this again. Who knows, it may be that they are simply watching from the sidelines to see how it does and if fans really like it might consider making a future project. I played WCIII when it came out and I was blown away by the game and the acting that was involved. They even had the infamous Ginger Lynn in the game. She did a pretty good job herself. I wish this fan project group much luck and look forward to seeing what the end result is.

I've wondered why the Wing Commander series was allowed to die out. I had a lot of fun playing those games, although I suspect I was more tolerant of the cheesy acting & dialogue since I was around 14 at the time.

it wasn't just the WC series, it was just the whole genre dying out. People just didn't want to fly planes/jets/space fighters for some reason. I think as more and more FPSes (quake, return to castle wolfenstein, halo, etc) came out, they just gradually drew the audience away.

I remember playing a more modern version of Wing Commander with jet fighters. I really liked the WC Privateer game as well. The original Wing Commander was Awesome for it's time. I remember trying to explain it to someone and they replied "What the heck is a Kilrathi?"

I'm not too sure about a lack of customers. Sims and FPS have co-existed for most of pc gaming history. It seems in the last 10 years a lot of the sim products have been shelved for quicker development arcade stand ins, and shovelware

(sim) Links golf = (arcade) tiger woods

Any hint of a real Flight/space sim and us nerds go crazy until its once again shown to be a consolized hump of turd. (e.g. janes new JASF)

IMHO this also goes for:

A real golf sim (no thanks EA)

A real tactical shooter w coop (Rainbox Six [Rogue Spear type, no this Vegas crap]) , and orig ghost recon)

and

A real flight sim (If one doesn't show up soon, I may end up sending my brother win2k vm and vmplayer, with Jane's anthology already installed) Hell its been so bad I don't think I've bough a flight stick in 5-10 years, I guess I stopped buying them at some point...

I tell you... we had to play our sims uphill, BOTH ways...
and get off my damn lawn...

If they get a C&D can they just change all of the relevant names/locations etc and release it anyway, or would it be doomed because they've admitted it was based on WC?

If EA really owns the rights to this franchise then I doubt we'll see this for very much longer. If these dudes never contacted them that means the lawyers likely don't know about it. The second lawyers hear of a freeware product based on a franchise they own they'll almost always try and shut it down, even if no plans for a new game are in the works, now, or ever..

That's just the reality of it, unfortunately, as i've seen this happen plenty of times. It sounds like the developers at least kept this under the radar, which i'm sure has definitely helped their chances of it getting it finished and released. But now that they're actively promoting it through trailers and getting some press, it's only a matter of time.

I'd like to see a new TIE Fighter or X-Wing game. I really preferred the mechanics (and the polygons!) of that series over WC.

All that's required is for one copy to get out. At that point people can just redistribute it through bittorent and to hell with EA's lawyers.

If EA is smart they'll watch this and capitalize on it if it succeeds. Not like they were doing anything with the franchise anyways, and is free publicity such a bad thing?

WOW. This might be the best-looking fan-made game I've ever seen. I love space sims. If this is as good as it looks, I may have to buy a new flight joystick. I have fond memories of playing Freespace and other games on my old Gravis Firebird. Do they even make these things anymore??

I just hope the Cease and Desist doesn't come until after I download it. I am nervous that it will come quickly though.
