Oh I dunno about that. Tim Kaine’s name made everyone outside the DC beltway ask “who???” Vance has way more recognition as an author cum Trump surrogate and is a sought after talking head guy on all the major news networks.

The utility of a VP to a presidential candidate is typically narrow and electoral in nature. Picking somebody too much like yourself forfeits any ability to counterbalance the ticket. Vance seems like who you pick if you think you've already won the election...in July.

I think the campaign most definitely believes they’ve won the election in July.

Edit: You have to throw all the assumptions of what makes a good VP out the window. #1 requirement for this job was someone who won’t overshadow Trump and will stay well within whatever loyalty guardrails Trump establishes. I’d argue the #2 requirement, especially after 7/13, is that you have someone who projects as a “strong” white male “anti-DEI” candidate. Vance passes both tests with flying colors shades of white.

This pick is a little bit of good news for the Dems. It's not a big win, but at least it's some small good news in a shitty time right now.

Maybe Vance said that as a compliment, and given DJT's love for dictators, he probably thought it was a compliment as well.
 
So at least one GOP analyst is saying that the Vance pick may not mean as much for this election as the next election.

By picking Vance, Trump has essentially anointed him as the standard-bearer for MAGA, and the leading candidate for 2028. The MAGA apparatus will likely coalesce around Vance in a way that never, ever happened with Pence.

Trying to predict what happens to Trumpism without Trump is a tricky proposition IMO.
 
Picking Haley or even Scott might get him 1 - 2 % more of the vote. Picking Vance doesn't add anything. Ohio is already red. Probably the most obnoxious VP pick possible. Just a hateable dickhead in all dimensions. Adds nothing in terms of politics. Just another wingnut. Adds nothing in terms of demographics. Just another white dude. Has past of vehemently denouncing Trump which will be used against him.

Although, after the shooting, maybe Trump suddenly realized that maybe he is mortal after all, and he may need a clone batshit wingnut and a generally horrible person if it comes time to have an Acting President while he needs some sort of medical care.

Picking Vance is a sign that they are all in on the fascism thing, it has no electoral advantage. I mean they are steadfast to the Project 2025 manifesto. This is the goal. This is the plan. Vance is in the plan.
