Or in other words... Incentivized criminalization of existing guns? I mean, you can't ban guns without making it a crime to possess them. Saying "We'd really like it if you'd give up your guns, but we aren't going to force you" certainly won't stop crime, which is supposedly the goal of removing guns from the hands of civilians.

We already have limits and controls (I won't say "strict", because that's a bit subjective, and depends somewhat on the state in question) on the purchase of firearms, and that (along with the tracing of firearms) is a not-insignificant burden on both retailers and the government and law enforcement. Now you want to add billions of rounds of ammunition to that? Good luck, I hope there's a budget for this.

Edit: Never mind the massive economic impact of hundreds (or thousands) of manufacturers losing a significant portion of their income. They will have two choices: Either hike the price for their sales to law enforcement/military by a huge margin, or go out of business (which would add a huge number to the unemployment). Where will the hundreds of thousands of people employed in the firearms/ammunition/accessories industry go for employment? If they hike the prices to LEO/MIL, where is this mystery budget coming from? We're already trillions of dollars in debt.

Everything you said sums up to "It's hard, so let's do nothing instead". Go big or go home.

I own one. It is. Just because it shoots little bullets doesn't change what it is.

It doesn't even come close, not by the assault weapons ban or any stretch of the imagination, please turn in your man card.

I'd tend to agree, classification wise even if it is on the small end of the scale caliber wise.

I used to own a little American Standard .22 Magnum revolver I wish I had never let go. Not the same as thing a LR, they are wimpy even, but that little thing had serious penetration for a .22 round.

You can still mess things up with a fast shooting .22, and they have a large capacity.

But you are not going to put a ban on things these days and they are just going to disappear to begin with, as many have said.

Gun ownership in the US has just been the norm for so long it's just a fact of life for a large portion of the population, as a heritage right and even passing them on from one generation to the next.

We can't even get voter ID laws passed because the $20 it would cost for an ID card is too big of a burden on the poor. Now you want to make it so only the wealthy can exercise their second amendment rights????

Wait, you are being sarcastic? My meter is broken? Ah, you got me!

yep, $20 stopping people from getting a voter ID when it requires a lot more and a lot more effort to get an ID. but, yer, i can plop down a few hundred bucks and get me a gun. Merica. :p

Most, if not all pistols would be included in the gun ban if it were up to me. Bolt action long guns and pump or lever action shot guns with an obvious hunting purpose are the only guns that should be legal to sell and trade.

Essentially any gun designed for war or combat should be removed from society, and any semi-automatic weapon regardless of purpose. If this leaves anyone feeling unsafe or unfree, so be it.
I suppose so. Good luck to any president or law maker who attempts that though. The best they can ever do is magazine restrictions, and the bullet button thing that NY now has.

When you have people who are lone wolves, can get easy access to weapons, and are religious zealots well this is what you get. I don't care if every American was strapped with an M15, it's still going to NB e nearly impossible to stop mass murder.

And the shooter doesn't have to be a Muslim. They can be guys like James Holmes, Adam Lanza and Timothy McVay.

you can't stop stupid. you can do something about the stupid people who wnats to buy a gun . :p

if you can't afford it and the license and certification to have a gun, then no gun for you.

The OP just posted this after the shooting trolling crap to begin with I imagine, I don't think he has posted once since the first post.

Everything he listed are all ready reasons to ban you from purchasing a firearm, but it just keeps rolling of course.

Was pretty much a "there has been a shooting, make a random gun thread" thing to me.

Off to other things.

I'm a gun lover. More precisely, I love to shoot and to hunt and I believe firmly in the Second Amendment, but at this point I would have no issues if ALL semi-automatic weapons were outlawed. It will happen eventually. The tide is turning and there's nothing that the alarmists can do about it.

Over the next 30-50 years, I see some or all of the following happening. Again, it doesn't matter how vehemently the gun nuts protest, it will be the will of the majority. Not to mention, most of today's biggest gun nuts will long be dead.

Phase One. Sometime between now and 2030.

  1. All firearms must be registered. Doesn't matter if it's a .22 single shot made in 1930 handed down from your great-Grandpa to your Grandpa to your Papa to you. If it doesn't have a serial number, it must be assigned one and it must be on the books.

And it should go without saying that owning or possessing an UNregistered firearm will come with stiff fines and/or jail terms. And for all of the laws pertaining to owning guns, the same.

  2. Ownership of one or more firearms will require a federal firearms permit. To qualify and receive this permit will require an extensive background check, paid for by the applicant. This permit will have to be renewed every [x] years. If you don't already hold a permit, you will NOT be able to legally purchase a gun.

  3. The transfer of ownership of any firearm will have to be done through a federally licensed firearms dealer. Both parties must be present at the time of the transfer, and the buyer must hold a current gun owner's permit. There will be a small fee.

Phase Two. Between 2030 and 2050:

  1. The sale of all semi-automatic weapons will be made illegal. Long rifles, pistols, shotguns. All.

Phase Three. 2050+

  1. The possession of all semi-automatic weapons will be illegal. Get caught in possession of one and expect to spend a minimum of 5 years in prison, become a convicted felon and forfeit the right to ever own another firearm in your life.

Yes, this includes firearms that you already own. You should have taken the hint over the past 20 years. Think current laws and attitudes regarding automatic weapons. Think BATF or SWAT kicking in your door at 4AM with guns drawn because it's been reported that you own a 1911.

And that's just how it's going to be...

You just lost any credibility with me, seriously. The loons in California don't even consider it an assault weapon.

regulating jurisdictions, but usually includes semi-automatic firearms with a detachable magazine and a pistol grip, and sometimes other features such as a flash suppressor or barrel shroud.

A stock 10/22 has no pistol grip, no flash suppressor, nor a barrel shroud. You can modify one to add all of those, but that's not what we're talking about. Further no military I'm aware of uses a 10/22 in the field. Ruger makes a wannabe tactical model, but no one in their right mind considers a 22 an assault weapon, it's a look alike, and just barely more than a pump up Crossman air rifle.

See, this is the nightmare legal gun owners face, idiots.

Honestly, you should be ashamed.

Give it time and out clueless legislators might decide it's an assault rifle....

Don't forget, the same idiots claim a bullet button turns an AR into an automatic rifle.

Also, exorbitant fees and such wouldn't pass muster given they simply prevent some folks from owning weapons if they can't afford them. For now, ownership is still a right. These aren't toys for the rich....

Lol, ashamed? Your "nightmare" over restrictions on your inanimate toys pales in comparison to the nightmare suffered by countless families every year that lose loved ones to gun violence. Your imagined fear pales in comparison.

Believe it or not, I used to be anti gun, I hear what you're saying, I just don't agree with you.

And of course those poor souls shouldn't have had to die, you think I'm some kind of monster? I saw one of the memorial gatherings on tv today and I wanted to cry right along with them, what a horrific way to die.

See I'm not angry someone disagrees with me, I'm just flipping awed at the level of ignorance I see, and the compulsion to continuously prove said ignorance.

And honestly, it's not a "nightmare", I'm just kind of sad. I grew up in South Dakota with less than 1 person per square mile, standard gear was a fishing rod and a 22. I literally live in the middle of nowhere now.

Sadly, those days seem to be drawing to an end.

First they came for the Socialists...

And you guys would be proud of my last purchase, it's not an assault rifle and won't be affected by any of the planned legislation. The caliber is accurate out to a mile and a half. Just the scope costs more than all but 2 of the guns I've owned.

Totally agree. It's nearly impossible to stop shootings like Florida because a dedicated individual can get the tools to do something like that regardless of the laws. So that's why I'm flabbergasted when it's suggest that the first step in achieving that impossible dream of no guns in bad guy's hands is to disarm those who *DO* follow the laws and aren't a threat.

But I will challenge your assertion that good folks armed with guns can't stop a mass murderer. It may not stop a mass shooting *before* it happens, but as we just said, that's almost impossible most of the time. But having armed and trained citizens ready to shoot back is much better, IMHO, than having to wait for police to arrive.

If we agree that sending in cops (good guys with guns) is the appropriate response to an active shooter, then why not allow citizens to do the same. Are cops some super humans? Are we sheep that won't even protect ourselves? Do we make it easier for evil folks to prey on us by passing laws that only disarming law abiding citizens?

I agree that it would be better to live in a civilized society without guns where everyone played nice and violence was unheard of. I just don't know how to achieve that noble goal, and I am disgusted by individuals who want to throw away my freedoms in a vain effort to achieve it.

You'd think if anything was ever to be done about guns it surely would have happened after that fella slaughtered the classroom full of adorable little kids. Nope!

This time it's totally going to be different.

You, sir, err in thinking that your "plan" has anywhere near enough support to be passed or implemented. Most law enforcement officers believe in private gun ownership for law abiding citizens. Do you think the National Guard, many of whom privately own guns, is going to kick in their neighbors doors to enforce such a plan?

The entire plan would be considered unconstitutional by many, and possibly start a civil war. Good luck.

I won't lose any sleep over it.

There is a pretty high chance I might have made the suppressor on that .50 caliber in your picture. Looks like one of ours.

But I do not know much.

*edit* nah, it isn't, after looking at it again.

Short ass range to have a Barrett type sniper rifle at to begin with.

If someone misquotes the "First they came for this or that" again saying it was Jewish to begin with, would be pretty out there.

Just a pet peeve of mine these days also.

It's not a plan. Any more than the weather is a plan. You err in not recognizing the simple fact that public sentiment is gradually shifting. Twenty, thirty, fifty years from now? It's going to shift a LONG way.

The entire plan would be considered unconstitutional by many, and possibly start a civil war.

No more than the current ban on automatic weapons.

I just think it's funny that those same people that are so quick to to paint every Muslim as a terrorist get butt hurt when they paint every gun owner in a negative light. Not every Muslim is a terrorist, not every gun owner is a murderer, but if you're gonna paint broad strokes, they can do that against you too.
