Who really still wants Social Security?

Am I the only one who thinks I can do better at saving miney for me than the government can? Do you realize that if you put away the money that the government takes in social security, you could have close to a minimum of $250,000 when you retired.. and that is the LOW end....

Sorry I don't think I need the Gov't babysitting my money and then taking 80% of it.

Your thoughts?

I can take care of my own money better than anyone else can......because I earned it and therefore are going to be more responsible with it.

It's not about whether I or you can do better... its about what we do with those people who inevitably WILL NOT plan and end up starving old people...

Pointless since no one is going to let you do that. Bush's privatization is just setting up a way to put some of your contributions into a few nanny funds where you owe part of the gains to the SS system and only get the excess.

Yes, I could get a better return investing it myself.

No, I don't think it's a good idea for most people to control their SS money beyond the nanny funds -- look at all the idiots who have bankrupted their retirement funds investing in Enron, Worldcom, tech stocks, pump-and-dump stock scams.

true, it was once about the starving old people. but we're going to have more starving old people than working young people. now what? personally, i don't really care either way.

Who really still wants Social Security?

All the people whom have paid into it all their lives and are drawing it or are within a few years of being able to, or those on disability......

The majority of the people do not have the income, savy, or the will power to invest for their future. Look at all the people that are in debt up to their back teeth, with past due bills coming every day. Do you really believe this person will take X dollars a payday to invest it for retirement.

Millions believe the lottery is the key to riches and will invest their share in lottery tickets.

Maybe you can do better, and I believe I can, assuming the national or world economy doesn't crash or we make the mistake of investing in the next Enron, or WorldCom, and there will be more of these in the future.

Social Security will be fine if we can keep the crooks out of the fund, specifically the congress and the president, and take the rich man's tax break away by removing the 90K cap on SS earnings every year.

I sure dont. With the Dems and Reps fighting each other I know it wont really help me when I retire.
I'd rather invest it in something and keep the money for myself.

While we are on the subject: I think that just about all insurance is a big scam.
SS is just govt mandated insurance.

As far as all the people who have payed a lot into it: Fine. We all have SSN's for that purpose. Let me have my money back now (or stop making me pay and give me very little later on) and let the old folks (no income making) have what they deserve.

We can't just end the system completely as there are those who will retire and need the funds we provide by working. I do think I could do a better job saving and investing the money than the government can. Let people deal with their own retirements. If they screw up, it's their fault and they have to deal with it. Those who take it seriously would be rewarded.

Oh, I see... I should get screwed over because some idiot can't save money for themselves. That's nonsense. Part of freedom is the ability to succeed as well as the ability to fail. Government shouldn't prevent people from failing. Government shouldn't be the parents to adults. Why should the majority of people suffer so a few people can benefit?

The funny thing is Bush's social security plan doesn't scrap social security. You can still use the current system if you prefer. If you are over a certain age (50 I believe), your plan doesn't change at all. If you are under that age you will have the option to invest in carefully managed plans. You don't have the ability to do whatever you want with the money. You have limitations that should prevent you from losing your shirt completely. Of course, since it would still be a government managed program you would propably do better if you managed your own money.

If people would cut up the credit cards and live within their means, this includes SAVING MONEY, then we wouldn't need this crap.

Good Luck...........live/work in Canada/Mexico??? Otherwise, it's gonna happen for the forseeable future......😉

and invariably these are the people who donot know what to do with money...... i'd rather have the government keep on to it than let people frivelously spend it, at least that way when they are 65 and have nothing to show for it, they don't get kicked to the curb, they have a somwhat garunteed income, yes its inefficient, but its better than not having it.

i make 27k this last year working as a grad student and doing a catering bit for weddings on the weekends, i payed a whole ~600 in SS, big deal, it doesn't make me angry cause at least i know that most of it should go to help those that are less fortunate in their finances, and i'm not selfish like most of the conservatives on this forum who foam at the mouth when they discuss how evil social security is and how burdensome it is on their life style.... grow up

Well, I've paid into it for 40 years with the expectation of getting something back.

And you deserve to get your SS. HOwever the younger generation does not need to be trapped into the same system that at best has benefits reduced by 25% by the time we retire.

There are pensions here as well. He's probably going to have to move to Cayman Islands or the Bahama...not sure. When I make my millions, I will research tax evasion further and report back.

Considering that privitized accounts in other countries turned out to be disasters, I'll stick with SS, thanks.

ANd the current setup is a trainwreck waiting to happen...Damned if you do...damned if you dont...

Meanwhile there are several millian state and local goverment employees that have private retirement accounts that are quite successful.

Keep in mind that the ones that fail are the ones breaking in to your garage to find food money.:Q:Q:Q

I can always buy private accounts on top of SS. I am 24, and have about $100K in my 401K and Roth IRA combined.
But should I wake up one day to a stock market crash, I will be happy to know there is still SS around. I am a low maintainance guy. I can live perfectly happily on SS check, or even 70% of SS check should it need to get cut. Peace of mind is a lot more important to me than the actual return. I want a guaranteed minimum living standard when I retire. That's SS. I don't expect it to make me rich. I have other investments for that.

Keep whining that the sky is falling, Chicken Little. In case you haven't noticed, it's not working. Bush's Social Security Desturction Program is dead in the water. No one believes him.

That's what happens when you continually cry wolf.

Keep wailing though. It's entertaining.

And please, keep those cards and letters coming. 😉

I really still want Social Security.

🙂
