Oh, I see... I should get screwed over because some idiot can't save money for themselves. That's nonsense. Part of freedom is the ability to succeed as well as the ability to fail. Government shouldn't prevent people from failing. Government shouldn't be the parents to adults.

agreed. old people should just have more children to support them. this is how they do it in other countries.

next step is mandatory state-sponsored elimination of the "failures". germany tried this 50 years ago. china does it now.

Why should the majority of people suffer so a few people can benefit?
actually somebody mentioned on one of these boards that 50% of seniors depend on SS as their sole income source and a whopping 72% say SS is a major portion of the income. cat food?

i mean 50% of people have below average competence. the way you worded your question implies social security taxes should be raised so that they (the majority) would benefit from YOU.

If you can't beat inflation with your investments then the economy is dead and social security would probably be dead as well. Either that or the invester is dumb.

But should I wake up one day to a stock market crash, I will be happy to know there is still SS around. I am a low maintainance guy. I can live perfectly happily on SS check, or even 70% of SS check should it need to get cut. Peace of mind is a lot more important to me than the actual return. I want a guaranteed minimum living standard when I retire. That's SS. I don't expect it to make me rich. I have other investments for that.

Why do people automatically assume that they will still have SS if the stock market crashes or the economy fails?

From Fingolfin269-

"Why do people automatically assume that they will still have SS if the stock market crashes or the economy fails?"

Historical precedent- 1929. The uber wealthy and the government were the only men left standing, and the govt was the only one accountable to the citizenry, short of revolution. It took a major political shift in 1932 to achieve some direction other than down, but the govt managed to respond in ways that were mostly constructive.

Who still wants SS, Justadude? You do, you just haven't figured it out quite yet. Apparently, a fair number of people never will, being mentally snakebit by rightwing rhetoric...

Millions believe the lottery is the key to riches and will invest their share in lottery tickets.

Maybe you can do better, and I believe I can, assuming the national or world economy doesn't crash or we make the mistake of investing in the next Enron, or WorldCom, and there will be more of these in the future.

Social Security will be fine if we can keep the crooks out of the fund, specifically the congress and the president, and take the rich man's tax break away by removing the 90K cap on SS earnings every year.

typical democrat response and attidutde, you thin k every average america is stupid and dumb except for your snooty more educated selves...... thats why you keep loosing seats, thats why you loose elections.....

assumption is the mother of all fu*k ups....

and calling people dumb, the people who need to vote for you, wont get you elected....

im poor, i dont work, i have just enough money to live off of, im in college, and have tons of student loans, yet still take some money and have already started retirement plans....

again, we dont need to govt to run our lives and control everything.... social security is important....but it needs to be fixed...and i dont know how...i think the personal account might help, but there needs to be reforms to it as well

One doesn't need credit cards to buy a house. A good friend of mine has never had a credit card nor a car loan and bought a house via FHA with very little money down back in Nov. 2004.

Saving is what people need to do. But, in today's consumer society, that's just not going to happen.

saving is important...yes...but if you play the credit game right you can help yourself out....of course if your income level is right you can get any loan....
