i use the 4 wheel drive on my toyota pickup frequently when it snows here in Massachusetts and also when offroading. oh ya plus its just cool to have 🙂
 
Two handy reasons: going to some beaches which have really bad roads, pulling our boat out of the water, those ramps can be really slick.

I probably don't NEED it, but I sure as hell enjoy it. Nothing like taking my weekly 40 mile off road excursion every sunday 🙂

The nice thing is that the only person that has a say in whether I need one or not is me. I really don't care whether other folks think I need it or not.
 
if you could see my Cherokee right now, you would say i need 4wd 🙂 The only reason you can see what color it is is because it rained(poured) last night.
 
I've had AWD plenty of winters in nova scotia. Buying a car there it's a consideration although you can definitely make do with only 2 wheel drive, but anything south of the top line of states in the US and unless you're doing off-roading you really are wasting money due to the infrequency of snow, which is really all the average person ever needs it for.
 
i've never gone anywhere taht my front wheel drive sentra couldnt go. its gone through snow, mud, off road, through a creek... basically, i bet its gone through harsher terrain than about 75% of the SUV's out there.

granted, it sucked, i had to go slow, and my tires spun a lot. But i'll be damned if it didnt get me where i needed to go.

when they're polluting and making the world suck more for me, and raising my gas prices. then yes. it matters.

I live in Iowa.
It's a necessity if you want to go someplace when the roads are crap.
It does help in cornering on snow packed roads. You can "feel" the front end pulling you around the corner.

i could just walk or something. that is pointless.. at least when i'm driving off road and stuff, i doing it with a purpose. 🙂
