Sony CLIE. If you like the palm OS, i think its the best one. Features/price wise it beats the Palm V easy. If you want color, the Visor Prism has a much better screen then the IIIc.

To me, PDA's are all about form factor. Thats why the Palm Vx still rules, and
will until they come out with a PalmVcxi (or whatever you would call a palm V case
with color screen and wireless).

You can always go with the PalmV with the OmniSky attachment. I don't like the palm generally because there's no upgradability. Handspring and Sony Clio (using PalmOS 3.0) solves some of the upgrading concerns, but... still missing somethings.

As I've said in the beginning, it all depends on what you want to do with your PDA. Judging from what I've read (what you want to do), I say go with a PalmOS. 2M might even be enough, but if you start getting bored and installing games, 2M is suck. You might want to account for future upgrades of applications and get something like an 8M one.

All depends on what you're looking to do.

Do this - take the best Palm offering (the 3c, 5x or the 7x) and compare them to a PocketPC device. Seriously - put them side by side and try to enter contact information, enter schedules, etc. The most important aspect is how easily you can enter information and retrieve it.

As a former employee of Palm, I would have to say that their OS is crap and their "high end" handhelds are way overpriced. I personally like the PocketPC over the Palm any day. I would recommend the Palm to people who think Macs are the sheot and AOL is the best ISP out there.

I own a Palm 5, 5x, 3, 3x and a 7. But, I never ever use them - I would rather use my Cassoipeia E125 anyday. I've given a few of my older Palms to my roomates and family and after seeing my PocketPC, they all want to dump their Palm for either an E125 or iPaq.

yeah... i used the Win CE back in the 2.x stage and it sucked, but now it's really coming to form.

Palm Vx = Overpriced but nice.
Palm VII = Overpriced and not very useful gimmick
Palm IIIc = Overpriced
Visor Prism = Overpriced
Visor Edge = Overpriced, but my absolute favourite of all of them
Compaq iPaq = OK price for the hardware, but most of what it does is superfluous for most people (but it is a good machine).

Palm IIIxe = Excellent deal, but may be possibly more than you need
Visor Deluxe = Good deal, but may be possibly more than you need
Visor = Probably will suit your needs, unless you can get in on that ultracheap VDx deal. If you use AvantGo though, you will quickly grow out of a Visor though.

It's very easy to enter info on a Visor Deluxe, which I own. It's easy on an iPaq too (my friend has one). Dunno what you're talking about. It's interesting to note that until recently, the Palm OS machines actually synch'd better with Microsoft's own Outlook than Windows CE did. However, they are now equally good. I like my friend's iPaq, but the key problem is he paid more than twice what I paid for my Deluxe. And, I actually have more software related to my field on my VDx than he has on his iPaq, because the software support in my field is MUCH better for the Palm OS. His screen is better, but he never watches videos, and he doesn't listen to MP3 etc. His battery life sucks though. So, in essence, he paid more to get effectively less functionality than what I have. On the other hand if you NEED all that extra stuff, then by all means spend your money on it. I'd consider buying a Pocket PC machine if they cost $299. Unfortunately, they don't cost anywhere near that low a price.

See my sig for more info on the Visor.

Hm i thought the visor deluxe was stuck with o/s 3.1 or something:p If you search the hotdeals forum u can get the palm xe for 95 or so:) The deluxe really has nothing over the palm.. the expansion port is pretty uselesS:p The deluxe is also slightly larger.

Heheh, tell that to the guy who loses all his contacts on the road while carrying only his Palm/PocketPC. Having a backup module is very nice.

One cool thing about the Casio E125 is that it has a back up battery. Unlike the iPaq, you will not lose your data if the unit runs out of power.

I actually think that entering data on the PocketPC is much easier than the Palm. I love the fact that I can enter data using 3 different methods on the unit itself - Character Recognizer (akin to Grafitti), Keyboard (a virtual keyboard) and Transcriber (delivers what the Newton could not with character recognition - Beat up Martin will not turn into Eat Up Martha).

The cool thing about my friend's iPaq is that he can connect his Compaq 802.11b cards and roam around his apartment browsing the net. He also has a Ricochet he has connected, so he can again browse the web, chat on AIM, where ever he goes. All these things cost money - but they are worth it if you are a "PDA power user". He also plays Quake and Doom on his iPaq. It's all pretty cool, in my opinion.

This is not meant to diminish anything the users of the Palm or Visor, CLIE or TRG Pro Palm's - they are all very fine devices.

Zucchini - you can get back ups for the Palm. But, only on certain models. I believe the TRG Pro Palm has a compact flash slot. Also, the Sony CLIE has a memory stick slot for backups and more. Also, it is rumoured on CNet News.com (and other web sites, I'm sure) that the new Palm 5 series are coming out with some kind of expansion slot as well.

I have a Newton MessagePad 120 and I was heartbroken (ok, maybe just pissed), when they discontinued this product. :(

I now use my PalmIIIx (and it's not the same!) but am thinking of getting a Visor Platinum (or Palm Vx)

I would recommend buying the Handspring Visor Deluxe for $109 after rebate.

USB out of the box
PC/Mac support
8MB RAM
Modules Expansion Slot
Palm OS (THOUSANDS of free/shareware applications)

Can you beat this for $109? I think not.

Even though you all loathe PC World magazine they did have a good article recently about Palm vs. Win CE PDA's.

Their top picks which I agree with partially were the Casio Cassiopeia EM-500 and Handspring Visor Deluxe. I would have either replaced the Casio with the Compaq iPaq or added that to the list.

If you want the ultimate PDA then get the Palm Vx, even though it's like 1-2 years old I still consider it THE BEST PDA on the planet.

The new Visor Edge looks nice if you can afford $349 (from Staples.com after coupon).

Zucchini - Yes I got this deal except for the $10 off coupon didn't work for me so my total was $109 instead of $99.

But still $109 for a high end Handspring Visor Deluxe with free shipping is an AWESOME PRICE!

Can you copy/paste which comment you are referring to in that thread? Make sure to include the entire post.

This was the last post in that thread.

For this price the visor is definetly a hotdeal.. I've already bought a palmxe, but total cost for me was 129 It hasn't shipped yet so I still have time if this deal still works.

So let me get this straight.. u gotta call in with a phone number to a target store that has it in stock right?

also, how long ago did u buy?

Assuming you can get this Handspring Visor Deluxe for $109 I would definitely cancel your Palm IIIxe order before it ships because:
1) $109 is cheaper than $129 :)
2) The Handspring Visor Deluxe is marginally better than the Palm IIIxe

Yes Staples.com will have to call your local Target to verify the competitor's price and if it's in stock. The same color must be in stock.

Here's how my order worked out:
$249.99 Handspring Visor Deluxe Blue from Staples.com
-$40 off $200 coupon code
-4% Dash.com
-free shipping
=================================
$201.59
-$50 price match Staples against Target
=================================
$151.59
-$50 Handspring rebate
==================================
$101.59 final price after 4% Dash and $50 rebate

The two most difficult parts you will encounter are:
1) Most Staples.com warehouses are OUT OF STOCK on the Ice, Blue and Graphite models. I was fortunate to get a Blue although Ice was my first choice (out of stock).
2) Price match.

Will you be placing your Staples order online or over the phone?

Don't order now because the Staples and Target colors have to match. I would wait until morning when Target opens and ask them which colors do they have in stock? Then order that color from Staples.
