Who is getting Alice TODAY?

If anyone's played both the sequel and the original (and somewhat remember the first game), would you take a minute to comment on how level design compares between the two?

From my son, who loves ALICE (the darker side like the original book), and is playing the game...

In this one you can go from 3rd to 1st person view...

You collect things to upgrade your weapons (less weapons than the first but more powerful)...

Says the level design is very good, good mixture of fighting and puzzles...

He says the STORY is good too!

Man it is refreshing to watch my son ENJOY a game rather than BITCH about 1 or 2 things that might not be perfect which seems to be the trend here...

Some here need to regain that CHILD LIKE mentality and just playing games for FUN!!!!

So it's only available on Origin or retail?

Can anyone who bought it on Origin comment on the service?

EDIT: N/M I see it's on Direct2Drive as well, but doesn't have the bonus content or the original game like Origin does.

you can get it retail. i got mine from amazon, you dont have to even run origin to play the game. you do however have to register it once with the service

You PC gamers that bitch about EVERY game that comes out need to find a new hobby...

Yep.

PC Gamers bitch about games.

Platform Agnostic Gamers play games.

Dumb question I am sure...but my daughter wants to play too, can I install it on a second PC or not?

Origin's FAQs say you can install games from it on "up to 3 PCs", but I doubt you can be logged in at the same time from two different PCs.

IT PLAYS FINE!

QQ some more

Anomaly1964 makes a great point
I don't have to play it to know it doesn't play fine or look acceptable with a frame rate cap for me. If you don't notice it, then more power to you. Besides, the game does look like it's rather fun, completely old school gameplay as far as I saw. I'd just rather not support a developer so lazy they can't take literally 10 seconds to change 1 line in the UE3 INI for the PC version.

So is it as good as the first one then guys? The first alice game was the dogs bollocks, i played it for the first time in 2007 and it was that good the outdated graphics didnt bother me at all 😀 Graphics arent everything but i have my limits to what i can get into.

What's wrong with it being on Steam? I could understand if you complained if the game was only on Steam, as that would be problematic for users like Apoppin, but it being on Steam as well just provides another option. I could literally remote into my desktop and have it download it right now.

I like how Anubis didn't respond to this. I honestly don't understand how he could hate Steam so much that he wouldn't even want a game on the system for others to buy even if he didn't have to get it that way. It shows either some deep seated irrational hatred or potentially Steam is some sort of threat to whatever he does (own a retail chain store? work for EA?)

Anyhow, I very rarely buy physical boxed games anymore. The last few I bought, I haven't even taken the time to install yet. And I don't plan to use Origin just yet. So Alice is off my list until it comes to Steam.

Oh man that is so dope! I bought the original years ago but never completed it and then lost my stupid manual. I may pick up both just for the hell of it.

an hour or two in I can say that I am enjoying the very breathtaking and colorful world.

There is a lack of polish most evident in two things i've noticed so far, but the examples may be evident of other game mechanics.

1) Alice's animation "pops" when she does 180 degree turn. There's no animation at all for her quick turn, she just is placed facing the other direction in an instant.

2) The vorpal blade appears and disappears out of nowhere. This is outdated. Witcher 2 has Geralt sheath his swords. It would be nice if alice drew the blade from somewhee instead of having it snap into her hand. I suppose this can be explained by her dream state, but there is not even a "poof" for the blade, it is just draw in her hand in an instant when the attack button is pressed.

3) Just added this one. Textures are low res. Game looks great, but the ground and some other areas are a bit of a letdown.

i am into Alice, Madness Returns and i have to say i am a bit disappointed - after only about an hour (or two)

It is another dark - even darker - and much moodier game than the original. As in the original, Level Design is top notch and the artwork is spectacular including the period setting in London. It is an amazing world with apparently the same issues as in the original game - it is hack and slash. Original ideas are repeated over and over (and over) and over and there is no sense of progression. i got an upgrade on my weapon but don't notice any difference (other than it takes less hit points to dispatch an enemy).

Some great things .. and some boring things repeated over-and-over. Still there is that sense of exploration and i do want to see what is next. Looks like a '7' .. but that can change; a decent game but probably not worth $60.

Also there are some bugs. Like getting stuck. And some textures are pretty low res. i will press on. i need to explore more. It is weird-looking in S3D and i need to tweak settings further to see if it will work well instead of distract; i haven't tried 5760x1080 yet neither.

i hate the entire concept of steam and cloud like services, so i avoid them. in the other thread where this came up i simply stated that i will most likely never purchase a game that requires steam. I heavent yet and it has not stopped me from playing any game that i have wanted to. To be perfectly honest id buy something on the xbox or PS3 before installing steam.

as for alice im further into it then most here im guessing, and enjoying it very much. on teh wep upgrades comments the first one gives you an extra attack in the chain + more power, the 3rd makes it more powerful and faster. Im assuming the Hobby horse works the same way but ive only done 1 upgrade for it and the pepper grinder so far so im not sure what their 3rd levels are.

only seen 1 buggy bit so far. had an enemy get stuck below the floor so i couldent kill it and thus couldent finish the event and progress it worked fine when i restarted from the checkpoint

After messing around a bit I found some tweaks that can be made in the AliceEngine.ini found in \Documents\My Games\Alice Madness Returns\AliceGame\Config.

Even with Physx on high the config file shows "PhysXLevel=0". Changing this to "PhysXLevel=1" will enable GPU physx as confirmed by the overlay in the Nvidia control panel.

Setting "bSmoothFrameRate=FALSE" will remove the fps cap and turn off Frame Rate smoothing. Alternatively you can adjust "MaxSmoothedFrameRate=" to raise the fps cap and keep Frame Rate smoothing on. I'm not too sure what that implies.

Setting "AllowD3D10=" to TRUE causes the game to crash on start.

Did you experiment much with these settings? PhysX GPU is on without changing the "PhysXLevel" setting. The game starts off with PhysX CPU, but changes to GPU when you are in the game. Leave it at 0. "bSmoothFrameRate" to False causes jittering with the framerate. Even on my 3-way GTX 580 setup. Keep it at TRUE. Setting "MaxSmoothedFrameRate" from 31 to 61 made the game MUCH smoother with 60hz and vsync on.

for those running Crossfire turn it OFF you will see a massive performance increase
might work for SLI as well

Well if it's not worth $60, that's fine, since it's only $50.

The more i play it, the more i like it. i haven't paid for a game in a long time - i get them for performance evaluations - in this case i am doing double duty reviewing Alice and DNF for AlienBabelTech - both game reviews and performance evaluations (including PhysX and S3D).

i took off the 30 FPS cap and it is very smooth at 60 FPS.

.... it also makes excellent use of PhysX 😛
(slow on the CPU and non existent for Radeon GPUs)

Post some screens, you bastards!

Also, it has been way to long since I played the first Alice and don't remember shit other then some of the great art. Does this one pick up/reference to the first a lot?

I picked up the game today from GameStop... they only had one copy left! It feels weird actually having a physical copy for once.

Is that true for 11.6? Not sure if you've upgraded yet.
