Marathon had mouselook as we know it today, but the default keymap wasn't WASD. So you had arrows + mouselook. So I'll credit Bungie/Marathon/Marathon 2/Marathon Infinity.
Edit: Ah, System Shock had it first by a few days or something stupid like that. But Marathon was still the better game.

For me, I *think* it started around Quake II. I learned to use mouselook for the first time, then the game suddenly becamse super easy. I could run circles around these single-player enemies and I could wiggle my way through hundreds of enemies at once..
Wasn't it invented by the QII tournament winner Thresh Hong?

This is definitely false. I remember getting into debates with friends over whether using the keyboard to look/turn was faster/slower than using the mouse. Ultimately I discovered that the mouse was faster, because you could turn 180 pretty quickly, but could not do so with the keyboard.

IMO, Shift, Capslock, and Tab, all of which are easily recognized by feel are closer, and they make great run/weaponmode/scoreboard keys.

You're just saying that because you're a Marathon fanboy
Wasn't SS also the first game to implement leaning around corners?

I didn't get the idea it was the default method of looking around until Unreal 1
It was in Marathon, and you could even look up and down as opposed to most games at the time which only had side to side mouse look.
