Arrows > All

Arrows suck, you have access to virtually no keys. Another reason arrows suck is that you have to have your keyboard pushed far to the left, sometimes you would not be able to do that pending on desk room.

To the above: Going ESDF over WASD does not sacrifice the accessibility of tab, caps-lock, and shift yet it adds a couple extra buttons (and is your natural typing position anyway). However going RDFG puts tab and caps-lock out of your reach now (and is not your natural typing position).

I believe Dark Forces2: Jedi Knight (1997) was the first game released with default movement keys of wsad, and completely free mouselook. I'm not 100% on this, but I believe it was one of the first if not the first to incorporate both.

You guys should fire up Doom/DoomII w/ WASD and jDoom + Mappacks. It's so much easier and different...

Quake 1 definitely had mouselook with no autoaim on some servers, depending on the settings. kitty1.stanford.edu anyone?

I definitely played Doom 1 and 2 with the mouse. But I think I had to modify the config file to disable the <mouse up> = forward and <mouse down> = backward. But I used SZXC, not WASD. I remember reading about Doom players who used this keyboard + mouse combination.

I don't think I switched to WASD until Jedi Knight with it's bazillion different hotkeys (weapons and Force Powers).

BTW, for those who don't remember, here's the game release timeline:

Wolfenstein3D
Doom and Doom 2
Heretic (limited up/down)
Duke Nukem 3D (limited up/down)
Quake 1 (true up/down)
Quake 2

I have no idea about Marathon.

Arrows suck, you have access to virtually no keys.

Arrows work for me.

Numpad 0 for jump.
; for reload.
' for switch ammo.
Enter for the use key.
\ for minimap.
/ for prone.
Right ctrl for crouch.
Right shift for sprint or walk.
] for scope.
[ for laser sight or any other additional changing of view.
Numpad 1-9 for potions, toolbar items, or whatever.

Jesus, how old are you people? "Was Duke Nukem before Q1?" "I thought HL was the first game to use WASD?"

Wtf kind of forum is this?

it was, i used to play with wasd and mouselook. i wasn't comfortable with mouselook so i used arrowkeys and pageup/pagedown instead. didn't use mouselook until cs (version 1.0 :p), unreal and quake2. not sure which year but i think it was in 2000.

I believe Descent had true 3D, but it may have operated differently than today's engines. The ship had 6 degrees of freedom and the levels/opponents could be "above" you so to speak. Although you had differing levels in Doom, one level couldn't be below another level; you couldn't walk underneath a set of steps. And the map in Descent was a wire diagram that could be rotated freely in any direction.

But the game didn't have mouselook, making it pretty damn hard to navigate with the keyboard when you're rolling and pitching and yawing in every direction while another ship is attacking you. I hated that game.

That's the first game where I really felt like tossing my cookies after 5 minutes of playing. I had to build up a tolerance to it, bit by bit. I never did finish that game.

I believe that's one of the first game servers ever to become recognized by name.

 to kitty1.

There was also a runequake server everyone played on in the L.A. area, wish I remember the name. It was full nearly 24/7.

i used it in doom. dunno how it came about. it got around. started off with arrow keys but thats cramp city if u use it too long and try to reach those alt/space ctrl keys. so u do eventually just have to search for a better solution..and it ends up being wasd. i actually used ascx for a while using thumb first and 2nd finger instead of the three middle fingers.. went to wasd because it freed thumb for space bar.

although other games had it Quake 1 was the first game I remember using a mouse with. I remember starting out using the arrow keys and a 2 button mouse after one of my friends convinced me to try it.

+MLOOK :)

Dammit, that Wikipedia entry pointed out to me that ESDF is a superior layout for my playstyle. I'm going to have to retrain myself now.

Man, this stuff is all so many years ago (=P). Quake1 was the first game i remember playing with mouse look. HL was the first game to ship with WSAD default controls, in fact, it's the one that trained me to use WSAD. Doom had movement mapped to the mouse (rotate left/right move for/aft), Duke3d had a weird psuedo-mouselook thing that seemed to stretch everything. I don't think it was until QuakeII that mouse look became 100% ingrained in the PC gaming community. I do remember jumping right into Q2 using arrows and mouse(before I played HL). I don't know about Marathon, I never played it. I never got to play the first System Shock too, and consider myself deprived. :(

u didn't play over modem or on bbs eh? the mouse mattered even with doom1-2 when playing on bbs/or direct modem to modem. only when you play against other humans do u notice u just have to use the mouse. i do remember how easy it was to pick off the kb players. they had those aweful smooth wide turning arcs lol:)

I use arrows because my keyboard has arrows on both sides see.

Oops! You're right, I meant to say Doom 1 and Doom 2.
