Who invented WSAD + Mouselook in FPS?

Q1 had an auto aim that required you to be close to the target. Autoaim took over at that point.

I don't recall QII having vertical autoaim, or everyone would be a rail master.

quake 1... before that it was all keyboard (at least in terms of the game play you didnt need to aim up) . It look me a long time to move my right hand from the arrows to the mouse

hah i remember the first time i learned the mouse look and instead of turningleft and right using strafe keys. It was with Quake2 and it rocked. The skill of circle strafing forever changed my FPS career hehe.

I dont use WSDA tho. I use ESDF

This is definitely false. I remember getting into debates with friends over whether using the keyboard to look/turn was faster/slower than using the mouse. Ultimately I discovered that the mouse was faster, because you could turn 180 pretty quickly, but could not do so with the keyboard.

True, but in Doom, moving the mouse up/down worked like up/down arrows, moving you back/forward, which was pretty usleless, IMO.

EDSF in my opinion is much better than WADS. Not only do you get access to more keys, but you also have a point of reference because of that bump on the F key so you can find your spot without looking at the keyboard.

by your logic, RDFG (etc) have access to even more buttons, so no reason to use ESDF.

doesn't really matter /shrug

Not to revive this holy war, but I agree with the usefulness of Shift, CAPS, CTRL and Tab, but I've found that I can easily reach those keys, plus Q, A and Z with my pinky, so ESDF makes more sense.

The reason RDFG is not as appealing to me is that it becomes a stretch to reach CTRL, Shift, CAPS and Tab.

Right, I still remember downloading a config file for Quake1 that helped popularize the WASD config. I went as far as adding my own rocket jump macro. WASD + mouselook was probably "invented" during Quake1 as it was the first true 3D FPS. I still saw lots of people using keyboard only for Marathon at the time. I hooked pretty much my entire dorm floor onto that control config file.

It took a while before WASD became default control scheme though.

EDIT: playing Marathon for PC after experiencing Quake and all it's awesome mods. TOTAL letdown. It came out way too late for PC. Not to mention Duke3D was out around the same time Marathon was out... pipebombs = :D

You should definitely pick it up. It was a great mix of puzzles and shooting.

i remember playing online for the first time using MSN zone, and i got into a server, and i couldn't figure out how people were like spazzing out and jumping around all crazy while shooting and aiming. then i finally figured it out.

lol those are the games that had the auto aim that was always on...as long as you were facing the enemies...you hit them :p

Uh, no. That was Doom. In Marathon you could look pretty much at any angle you wanted and you fired where you aimed, up or down.
