There are intelligent people from all over the world...what this article does make clear is that there is a huge quality of life gap between the have's and have not's in India...far more pronounced and poignant then the same dynamic in America...far from my right to criticize another culture or country given that America has its own problems, but for anyone to make the claim that Indian students are beacons of work ethic and American students are lazy is ridiculous at best.

How come the USA doesnt have a Univ of America? I mean India gets it, so why dont we? All the bestest and brightest could go there and show off these brainy foreign kids. Of course it would probably cost $60k a semester and probably only 1% of people who apply get in, we could then call ourselves superior in some odd way.

I have an observation to make.

I found myself getting fiercely competitive and jealous reading about some of the super high scores and genius kids. What I was so concerned with related to my ability versus theirs and how people like myself and those less intelligent than me would be smothered by the more capable folks coming from places like India and China.
In truth, we should all be thrilled that more brilliant minds are being given a chance to contribute to the field of science, and all other fields.

when you are bragging your perfect SAT score at the age of 16 or 17, they get perfect GRE score.

GRE is a lot easier than SAT's to get 800's on because you don't have to get them all right. And the test is a joke anyways. practice questions
Not saying there aren't great schools and smart people out there, but the media likes to blow things way out of proportion.

Says you...each of those schools rank differently depending on department...some schools are stronger in various areas of study then others.

That being said, I sense a slight taint in your ranking, as MIT and Stanford consistently rank higher then Caltech in most school surveys and ranking...as for IIT, as it is a national Indian coglomerate school, is an apples and oranges comparison to private or even state universities in America.

There is also a differential between undergrad and graduate programs in terms of ranking.

That being said, I certainly wouldn't look down on anyone who graduates from any one of the schools you listed...they are all cream of the crop.

that's not true...yes, the test may be a "joke" as you say, but verbal GRE is definitely harder than verbal SAT. quantitative is equally easy.

i can score 800s on SAT verbal, but GRE verbal i can never get 800, although i consistently score beyond 95th percentile (upper 600s - mid 700s).

anyhow, you'll run into smart people wherever you go. let's not turn this into a pissing contest between countries/races

The result is apparent at No. 2 Secondary School. The

students live in dormitories, going home only on weekends,

and they're mostly studying from 6:30 a.m. until lights-out

at 11 p.m. On Saturdays they attend tutoring classes from

9:40 to 5:10, and on Sundays they do what one girl, Gong Lan,

described as six hours of "self-assigned homework."

Yea, that sounds like fun. I want that life, let me tell you

Ahh.. the IIT system.. as much as you guys say that cornell and stanford and caltech is greater than IIT, i will have to tell you the opposite..

IIT > *

Why, cause i lived at an IIT. My dad's a retired IIT professor. We lived in a road where all the people around us were senior professors. We had kids who lived at home and went to IIT. I know my friends who went to IIT from my HS, which was located inside an IIT.

Trust me when i tell you that IIT is much harder than Caltech or anything else. You spend 2 years minimum for training and you still cannot get in sometimes. My friend AP, got India #5 in 1997. My arch nemesis from HS, didnt even make the cut. My neighbour got like one of the last 25 spots, and ended up going to IITKGP (Khargpur) in some weird field, but he is doing fine now. The top fields are the toppers, who can actually choose where to go to.

So i say IIT>*

One of my profs in college went there. He's crazy smart and is currently working on traffic congestion modeling using wireless sensors for companies like ibm in hopes of some day putting an end to traffic. He taught graduate level networking courses in his spare time, which is why the school let him hold class at 9pm because that was the earliest he was available.

these kids are crazy smart no doubt.. but you're supposed to enjoy childhood before you enter the real world, not slave 24x7 over homework. i consider myself pretty smart, though i know those kids would embarass me quite easily... but at least i enjoy myself with friends.

these kids are smart...but look at the IIT Delhi distinguished alumni:

IIT Distinguished Alumni

scroll down for their bios...

75% of them came to the US for their graduate studies and degrees...and many of them ended up working in the US

yes, they are the brightest minds in the world, but when comparing institutions, no one can touch the schools in the west (US, Canada, Europe) when it comes to money, funding, and resources for research. thats' why the brightest minds still come to the states to get their doctorates and for research

-edit-

when you are dissing schools like MIT and Stanford, you are dissing the alumni from IIT who went their for their studies

This is not really a fair comparison to say IIT is better than all.

India has a population of 1 billion plus.....you can easily get a pool of 2-3000 geniuses.

If you took a larger population sample of N. & S. America you'd get similar pools. Some of the scholly kids from S. America I met were crazy smart and graduated in the top 1% in top undergrad/grad programs.

The best research is generally conducted in the US, which is why we have the most Nobel Prizes bar none. Our schools train outside-of-the-box thinking very well.

The US is fortunate to attract the best minds of Asia and India to live here. Their success equals America's success. Americans log in the most hours at work and are the most productive (but not efficient) AND provide the carrot of offering the highest salaries. Foreigners will continue to be attracted to this. Just like German reserachers of yore coming to the US, now it's Asia/India.

In the end, top street smarts and ambition count as much or more than 1% book smarts. Many billionaires in the past century didn't even finish high school....

Umm....Japan?

Not any more. I've read studies that show the US on top as workaholics. :(

Korea (according to Wikipedia) works the most annual hours. But according to some studies U.S. workers are the most productive in terms of revenue.
The output per U.S. worker last year was $60,728, the report said. Belgium, the highest-scoring European Union member, had an output of $54,333 per worker.
