on 2nd down they converted for a first down but it was close, and they moved the chains.

then on first down, they threw a 30yd pass or so and fred davis dropped it.

then all of a sudden the refs decided it wasn't a first down the prior play, so instead of it being 2nd and 1, it was 4th and 1.

and that is when garcon had it and they stripped it from him for the turnover that cost them the game.

That's so weird. I thought once the next play started, basically all decisions made by the officials and the ability to challenge them was locked in and over with. Does this mean the officials can back track whenever they damn well please?

That's what I gathered from it. I doubt there is precedent before last night's game that they ever gone back and reversed a down after the ball is snapped, after having not made a call prior to that snap.

Totally insane.

These last several weeks have truly been worse than the replacement refs last season.

its Bizzaro season!

shanahan said in his press conference that after the 2nd down, he asked for a measurement and the ref told him that it isn't necessary because it is a first down. then you had the 1st down after that, and then all of a sudden it is 4th down after 1st down, and the ref was ignoring shanahan's questions he was asking him at that point. he was given no explanation.

I think that was the issue. Shanahan asked for a measurement, was told he didn't need because they got the first down, the chains moved, the box changed to first down, a first down play was ran (and failed), only then did the head official say "wait a second! it is 4th down not second. Move those chains back!"

It could be argued a different play would have been called rather than throwing it down field when only needing a yard on 3rd and the 4th down turnover (which is what lost them the game after the referee debacle) wouldn't have happened.

From the replays, it looks like the head official signaled for it to be 3rd down, however, the line official and the chain gang moved anyway causing confusing from the coaching staff.

It looks like the VP of Officiating is saying play should have been stopped due to confusion over which down it was. http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap20...ay-should-have-been-stopped-in-redskinsgiants

That is a big problem. In situations where a play is suspect to be reviewed, if they run another play before the game is stopped, the play is no longer reviewable. I think the head ref goofed and should have just let it go as an incorrect spot, rather than cause the Redskins to basically throw away a play. The head official went on record saying stopping the play to reset the chains would have given Washington an unfair advantage, yet letting them think they had a first down and call a first down play doesn't somehow put them at a large disadvantage?

Yeah, thankfully this time it only affected a terrible team playing a mediocre team and didn't impact the playoffs or any 2013 season relevant team. "Playing for pride" is a non-factor when you're already in the dregs of the league standings and 3-9 vs. 4-8 doesn't mean squat. It even has minimal impact to next year's draft since WAS already traded away their 2014 #1 pick in the RG3 trade. Sucks to be the 'Skins in this scenario, but OTOH I'm glad it was them rather than tonight's Saints-Seahawks game.

Yeha?! Well say that when it is YOUR team! 🙁

(actually, I totally agree with you. Saints vs Seahawks would have been a total shit storm. This is all a rather perfect cap on the Redskins and their season)

If this had happened to my Raiders, Bottlegate would have looked like a ticker tape parade.

Bring back the replacement refs!!!

Peyton throws in the dirt while in the box, no calls. Alex throws outside of the box, flagged for intentional grounding. One of the many examples.

That call on Smith was ridiculous. I yelled at my wall when that happened!

And how many reviews have there been where the refs were clearly wrong?

Something is going on with the zebras. I don't know if its the pressure from the moron Commish or what...but some outside force is factoring into calls this year.

I wouldn't be surprised if one of these games a ref's shirt rips open and stacks of money fall out like back in the old WWF days.

Just my observation, the Chiefs and the Redskins had too many drops, like the receivers were playing for the other team.

Smith has no history of throwing consistent deep balls. The last 3 seasons, though, he has a history of being very accurate and smart. He's been a very good QB.

I think the majority of football fans have succumbed to a common number of delusions, the largest one, imo, is that Drew Brees has always been good--therefore SD was STUPID to trade him.

No one seems to remember how goddamn awful Brees was those first 3 or 4 seasons with SD, and only when Rivers showed up, Brees turned it on and raised his market value. The Chargers were a shit team in those days, obviously, but got a lot from the Rivers/Eli deal (used those picks for Merriman and, I think, Vincent Jackson?).

That aside, no one wanted to see Brees stick around. He had one--maybe it was two good seasons, before going to NO. Also, this turnaround coincides with Shottenheimer. Much like Alex Smith turning it around when new coaching blood shows up. No, I'm not comparing Smith to Brees, just that it's easy for people to hold on to past performance despite recent contrary evidence in very different situations, or conveniently erase past performance for whatever reason.

Actually, if anything, Smith could throw longer bombs before his shoulder injuries. And it was Marty that played a huge role in turning Smith into General Check-down that you see the last few seasons. The WCO did that. His long throws aren't many, but the completion percentage on long throws are up there with the elites.

The problems with the media is that they create misconceptions, and then repeat ad nauseam, then people repeat what's printed, then you have the idiot in chief said something like ”our BQ can throw more than 5 yards”... I blame that on ignorant.

I understand Smith's style of football, no gimmicks, no nonsense, it's a great core to develop a football team around.

Back to refs, what a bunch of nincompoop. I understand that the Chiefs receivers dropped plenty of balls, but on a few calls that were conveniently ”missed”, they were being mugged.

Another blatant call that I thought killed their momentum was the fourth down mark by Fasano, when he leapt for the first down and the line ref marked it 2 feet short.

I'm really sick of all the no calls on Broncos and for them, really; everything from offensive holdings to illegal picks. Shits like that would just taint their legitimacy. Are they trying to get Manning a ring before he's retired?

The Skins could actually have a HOT offense, but they just can't be consistent. The one thing I noticed last night, like I did most of the starting games this season is: WHY ARE YOU NOT GIVING THE BALL TO MORRIS?

RG3 injury and bad management decision fucked them up. Special teams and defense coordinators just need to be canned. Keep Shanahan around 1 more year.

Anyone want to change their pick before the game starts?

I want Seattle to win but I think NO pulls off the win.

ahahahaah HERE IT COMES!

(re: replay of Beastmode).

I was hoping they would just feed the ball to Lynch tonight. There's gotta be some NO veterans still suffering from PTSD, right?
