I was talking to my sister the other day, and she mentioned how she thought Edward Norton was a great actor. After thinking about it, I realized he pretty much played the same character in all his movies: intellectual, sly, unassuming. I was trying to think of an actor who's played a wide variety of roles and has done a good job doing so.

Who do you think has done the best job playing the widest variety of roles, convincingly?

I second Russell Crowe.

Tom Cruise as well. (like him or not, he's done a lot of good movies w/ a lot of varying roles)

I'll add Gary Oldman to that list.

Excellent choice, forgot that he was in The Professional until I recently saw it on HBO.

Mel Gibson can play any role as long as it involved his wife and/or kids being killed, and him being forced to take revenge on the responsible parties.

Russell Crowe
Phillip Seymour Hoffman
William H. Macy

At one point, my answer for the women would have been Meg Ryan, but she's been typecast ever since Sleepless in Seattle. Off the top of my head, I'd have to go with Jennifer Connelly.

Oh, and for actress, Julianne Moore

She's played a porn star, CDC scientist, school teacher, FBI agent, etc...

val kilmer is pretty versatile when you think of all the different kinds of movies he's done.

You guys don't know squat when it comes to actors, hands down the most versatile actor is Tom Hanks.

What about Jeana Jameson? She's pretty versatile....she can act on her back, on all fours, on her knees....

My pick is Robert DeNiro.

He was superb in Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, The Deer Hunter, The God Father Part II, Good Fellas, Wag the Dog.
Although he hasn't had good roles lately, he isn't afraid to get into silly movies like Meet the Parents and Analyse That.

For actress I pick Meryl Streep. A very versatile actress.

She could just about play any role in a movie. She was outstanding in the movies like The Deer Hunter, Manhattan,
The French Lieutenant's Woman, Silkwood, A Cry in the Dark
