these guys can play mobsters or antihero type cops that could very well be mobsters, and that's about it...not exactly versatile...

say what! Deniro was awesome in Cape Fear, I also love him in Meet The Fockers & Analyze this, he doesn't do many comedies but when he does I always enjoy them. And what about Ranging Bull & The Dear Hunter? Deniro is one of the most powerful actors out there, yeah a lot of his roles are mobsters or antihero cops but he's so damn good at them. He's so awesome in Deer Hunter it's almost scary.

Pachino was awesome in Any Given Sunday, and some other non mafia type movies :)

Both are slightly limited overall as most of the movies are something like Untouchables, Heat or Godfather type flicks. That would make Sam Jackson the greatest actor, who else could have pulled off the awesome performance in Black Snake Moan & make the horribly bad but still watchable Snakes On A Plane? Denzel might be more powerful, Freeman might be better overall. But Sam can do any kind of movie and will totally own in it. Even his bad movies are watchable because he's so damn good and cool :)

1. Denzel Washington
2. Sam Jackson
3. Robert Deniro
4. Robert Duvalle
5. Clifton Powell

5 is probably a WTF (what or even WHO the fuck to a lot here lol) but I've seen him in some awesome movies, very intense actor who's very versatile.

Scent of a Woman?
Raging Bull?
This Boy's Life?
A Bronx Tale?
Awakening?

(yeah, I bolded non-gangster tough guy Academy-award-winning characters for you)

The progression of American contribution to serious eh...acting goes like this: Brando -> DeNiro -> DiCaprio. It's pretty much accepted these days...

Squint
Laura Linney (she's great; plus I kinda know her by like, 2 degrees)
Norton
Cooper

Terrance Howard (I dig this guy's work more and more; role in Iron Man was weak, though; glad he fled for the sequel(s))

Tomei (she's getting more fearless, (and more nekkid ;)) these days. Talent + hotness always good)

Johansen
Penelope Cruz
Salma Hayek. (both of these ladies are mostly evoked on these pages b/c of their hotness; but they are also great actresses)

damn, looks like I hit freaking quote instead of edit...yet again :|

Female:
1. Julia Roberts

3. Demi Moore

I kinda like this list. Denzel's Malcolm X was fantastic, and on the same page, Jamie Foxx's Ray was too. I like Norton at the top after seeing American History X. I wasn't too sure about Pacino (was more sure of Deniro), but saw Dog Day Afternoon around 10 days ago and the extras and decided he's smart and talented, an exceptional actor. I think Hanks is exceptional. Jackson is extremely impressive. I'm a fan of Roberts and Portman.

Seriously the man's range and talent are astounding.

So many to chose from! And I know, I know, leaving Anthony Hopkins or Tom Hanks off any greatest list is blasphemy.

So these are not necessarily the five best living actors, just five I happen to really, really like:

Ralph Fiennes
Robert Downey, Jr. -- rent Chaplin if you disbelieve
Chris Cooper -- I just really, really like the guy
Kevin Spacey -- Probably an acquired taste for some.
Ian McKellen -- rent Richard III -- One of the all time greatest film acting roles.

And, finally, a shout-out to Harvey Keitel, whom I don't even think is all that great an actor, but whom I love nonetheless, as I also love Harry Dean Stanton and Rip Torn.

where is the versatility? I like them, but they sort of stick to the same roles.

Not to mention that they both haven't made anything decent since the 80's/early-90's.

I have a particular fondness for versatile actors, hence the Gary Oldman and Robert Downey Jr.'s placement.

Harrison Ford isn't particularly versatile, I suppose. Nonetheless, Blade Runner makes him my No. 1, and Rutger Hauer my number 5.

A non-clichéd classic scene. Reminds me of this image
