I forgot George C. Scott. Put him at the top of everyone's list and close the thread.

I'm going to go to a bar and drink until I figure out how I left him off my list...

Maybe because he's been dead for nearly a decade? You want to throw Laurence Olivier, Clark Gable, Cary Grant and Jimmy Stewart on your list too?

Hugo weaving was excellent in Priscilla: Queen of the Desert. LOL, go rent that and you will never look at Agent Smith the same way again.

Also, if versatility is a good quality, someone should mention Daniel Craig. Watch Casino Royale, then watch Road to Perdition.
Ah, forgot he was in that movie. I think I'll watch it again.

Meryl Streep
Sigourney Weaver
Robert DiNiro
Anthony Hopkins
Clint Eastwood

surprised no one's mentioned Jane Fonda, though she *has* only been in 2 movies in the last 18 years.

Ralph Fiennes (though he doesn't seem to get the best roles)
F Murray Abraham (not so active in the US scene as of late)
Philip Seymour Hoffman (great in everything he does; a seriously underrated actor, though he did get praise for Capote)
Kenneth Branagh (exceptional actor, imo and elevates any picture he is in)
Daniel-Day Lewis (There Will Be Blood was just insane)

That's what comes to mind immediately. Some others:

Matt Damon (the man is talented; he's versatile, always feels natural and has a nice range of emotion)
George Clooney (Michael Clayton, Syriana, Good German, Good Night Good Luck are all good)
Edward Norton (used to be one of my tops, but I don't think he plays well in roles like the Painted Veil)
Tom Hanks (great in everything he does)
Colin Farrell (I think he's underrated due to his choice of some shitty roles. In Bruges shows his range I believe)

That's all. Overall, Matt Damon is probably my overall favorite actor. I can't say I really disliked anything he's done. I think F Murray Abraham's Amadeus performance was the greatest in history and that Philip Seymour Hoffman is probably the most natural on screen.

We'll just assume you missed him in gems like Stuck on You, Ocean's 12, and Dogma to save your reputation on ATOT a little... but yeah, minus a few of those he's been in some real good movies, though usually overshadowed by better performances in my opinion (Norton > Damon in Rounders, Hanks > Damon in SPR, 2-3 people > Damon in School Ties, DiCaprio > Damon in The Departed, Clooney in Syriana, Denzel in Courage Under Fire, etc etc etc..) So yeah, maybe one of the 5 best supporting actors alive right now, but he's never been able to captivate me in a leading role (The Bourne movies are lame to me, role in Good Shepard was long-winded and boring).

I already ruined my reputation when I said I enjoyed Ocean's 12. I did NOT enjoy it the first time, but subsequent viewing proved it to be an enjoyable movie; admittedly though, for entirely different reasons than Ocean's 11 and 13.

I barely remember Stuck on You or Dogma.

but yeah, minus a few of those he's been in some real good movies, though usually overshadowed by better performances in my opinion (Norton > Damon in Rounders, Hanks > Damon in SPR, 2-3 people > Damon in School Ties, DiCaprio > Damon in The Departed, Clooney in Syriana, Denzel in Courage Under Fire, etc etc etc..)

That's part of what I like about actors like Damon, PSH and others; they can play a background role and really add to the cast. I think Damon was the star in School Ties, equal to Norton in Rounders and equal to DiCaprio in The Departed.

I also enjoyed his effort in The Good Shepherd. A bit of a quixotic movie, but I thought he played the character well.

Ahh, I read this after mentioning The Good Shepherd. I enjoyed it, but like Ocean's 12 it took a second viewing for me to appreciate the almost too slow quality to it.

I see what you mean about the leading role though. My only point was that I never really walked away from a Matt Damon movie feeling cheated or that I wasted my time. I can't say that for many other current actors.

Good Will Hunting, Damon < Williams lol.

For Kevin Costner ignorers (made up word?), go rent Open Range now!

Although, I don't think he is top 5. Amongst the living, top twenty easy, maybe 10 on a good day.
And this top 5 process is more thought provoking than what I, um, thought.
Can't change it, but it's the first 5 that popped in my head when I listed mine.

Wait, what? Dogma was awesome. I mean, he executes a whole boardroom with a desert eagle... That's Oscar-worthy right there.
