psst. jody foster is an actress, not actor..

All actress are actors.

stop being so pc.. actresses are women, actor is generally reserved for males. Technically you are right, but if you follow the spirit of this thread, we are talking about males.

I have a particular fondness for versatile actors, hence the Gary Oldman and Robert Downey Jr.'s placement.

Harrison Ford isn't particularly versatile, I suppose. Nonetheless, Blade Runner makes him my No. 1, and Rutger Hauer my number 5.

1. Tom Hanks
2. Morgan Freeman
3. Christopher Walken
4. Sean Connery
5. Denzel Washington

Male actors? I dunno, about "greatest" but my favorites are:

Brad Pitt
Johnny Depp
Leonardo DiCaprio
Tom Hanks
Daniel Day-Lewis

I think each one is extremely talented, versatile and tend to pick good movies to role in.

I'd take out Brad Pitt and swap with one of your runners up, probably Ed Norton, add Sean Connery and Jack Nicholson for longevity

Edit: Ed Norton is way better than Leo imo.

No way Brad Pitt completely deserves the be on that last. I'd probably get rid of Leo and put in Norton though.

Personal favorites:

Kevin Spacey
Tom Hanks
Morgan Freeman
Denzel Washington
Leonardo Dicaprio (I hate to say it, but he kicked ass in The Departed)

Runners up:

Sean Connery - he's awesome, but he always plays the same role
Brad Pitt
Samuel L - awesome, but generally just scares people
Harrison Ford - awesome, but just does the action hero thing
Matt Damon - It was a tough decision between him and Denzel, but IMO Denzel is a bit more realistic in his acting

You are the one being PC. Actor has been used to describe both sexes long before the term actress was ever used.

Was it so important to you that someone not mention a woman that you tried to make an issue out of it ? get a life.

Maybe they need to rename the Screen Actors Guild to Screen Actress Guild, just for the female actors ?

You gotta be kidding.

They need a movie with Jackie Chan, Steven Segal and Jean Claude, add in The Rock for good measure :)

Are you serious? Try again.

In no particular order:

Anthony Hopkins (Silence of the Lambs alone was enough)
Daniel Day-Lewis (Holy shit...can anyone top this guy?)
Christian Bale (Mostly for his non-Batman stuff, to be honest)
Russell Crowe (If you disagree, watch Master and Commander, American Gangster, and 3:10 to Yuma and get back to me)
Ian McKellen

Honorable Mention:

Edward Norton, who would've made the list if not for a few duds like the Italian Job and Incredible Hulk.

All excellent choices, with the possible exception of McKellen. Russell Crowe was on my original list (although 3:10 to Yuma was lousy, Master and Commander was magnificence.)

I've only seen one movie with Daniel Day-Lewis (Gangs of New York) in which I thought he performed splendidly, but nonetheless, it's the only movie I've seen with him.

Glad someone mentioned Paul Giamatti. He's reasonably versatile, although he always looks a little depressed.

Also, if versatility is a good quality, someone should mention Daniel Craig. Watch Casino Royale, then watch Road to Perdition.

Also, regarding Tom Hanks, he is one of the greats, period. His name will be legendary. However, I can't help the fact that he's been so prolific as to appear almost prosaic. Sort of like a white Sam Jackson. Also, he's a wee bit typecast. He's just too normal.

All zombies of course.

Daniel Day Lewis (The Boxer and In The Name of the Father are gems, along with 'My Left Foot').
Edward Norton (early career up to and including Fight Club, his later films have been mediocre, he needs better material to shine)
Clint Eastwood (call me crazy, but I am fascinated with his skill as a director, and it's increased my appreciation of his understated acting of late)
Tom Hanks (king of the popcorn-flick actors, equally at home in drama, comedy, whatever)
Kenneth Branagh (never had a breakout film, but always spot on, and interesting)

Holy fuck!

I forgot George C. Scott. Put him at the top of everyone's list and close the thread.

I'm going to go to a bar and drink until I figure out how I left him off my list...

I forgot Clint Eastwood. Put him on my list right after George C. Scott. Now I am with the folks who proclaim 5 is not enough.

Somebody shoot me (I'm sure you will be praised)!

You DO NOT put Jackie Chan with the likes of those other douchebags!

I think I like the Rock. He was downright great in Be Cool.

Clint's not dead. As a matter of fact, he has a new tough-guy movie coming out for the holidays that looks halfway decent, though a bit off of the Oscar-caliber pace he's been keeping lately.

Hugo Weaving [The Matrix, V for Vendetta, LotR, perfect in every role]
Christian Bale
Alec Baldwin
Clive Owen

Noteable Mention:
Ben Affleck [only after seeing his Countdown with Keith Olbermann skit on SNL]
Sean Connery

Ah, I can't think right now.
