Sounds easy to fix. Go to a store, or beg in the freebies thread or whatever and get an "ipod to USB" connector. The connectors been the same for the 3rd 4th 5th and 5.5th gen ipods. Maybe the 1st and 2nd too i dont kno. I think your Ipod is a 4th gen, could be third, but if its got the touch sensitive ring (clickwheel) its 4th gen.

Now once youve got that, go to apple.com and download itunes, then open itunes and connect the ipod to the computer with your cable. It will also charge through this cable. From itunes you can restore the factory settings somehow.

Unfortunately you may also need a firewire to ipod cable and wall connector (somone whos had a 4th gen or works in a store with them should know what i mean) Daft as it is, but you need the firewire to hook up the ipod to the wall socket plug so it can update its firmware and *possibly* the same thing if you want to restore it. Try restoring it anyways and if it asks to be plugged into an external power source i.e. the wall socket then you know you will need the firewire cable + plug that comes with it. If it dosent ask and restored itsself then yay, awsome free working ipod :)

Wow, thanks! What are my chances of pulling this off, though? :p

Actually, I won't beg in the freebies thread, the shipping would rape any good willing person, I live in Europe. Shipping to my country starts at ~$30.

I thought the 4G ipods could charge over USB. 3G and lower had to charge over firewire. That's why they gave the wall adapter with the ipod in the 3G and lower Ipods.

Chances of it working is hit or miss...since you've got a "hardware" problem, you can't really tell. If you still have a bit of a charge in it, see if you can get it into disk mode like amdhunter suggested. You can then at least get the ipod up far enough that you can restore the original factory configuration to it. If it's truly a hardware problem, then you're pretty much SOL...

They can charge over USB, but it specifically asks to be plugged into the wall socket with a firmware upgrade and maybe a restoration too, im not sure but it defo does with a firmware upg, and you need a firewire cable for that.

If you can't reset it, then let the battery drain before trying anything else. Then connect it for a few seconds to charge it, just long enough to see if it will boot into diagnostics. If so, leave it charged and run the diagnostics.

It would be a waste to charge it up now while it's stuck on the same screen.
