Sounds easy to fix. Go to a store, or beg in the freebies thread or whatever and get an "ipod to USB" connector. The connectors been the same for the 3rd 4th 5th and 5.5th gen ipods. Maybe the 1st and 2nd too i dont kno. I think your Ipod is a 4th gen, could be third, but if its got the touch sensitive ring (clickwheel) its 4th gen.
Now once youve got that, go to apple.com and download itunes, then open itunes and connect the ipod to the computer with your cable. It will also charge through this cable. From itunes you can restore the factory settings somehow.
Unfortunately you may also need a firewire to ipod cable and wall connector (somone whos had a 4th gen or works in a store with them should know what i mean) Daft as it is, but you need the firewire to hook up the ipod to the wall socket plug so it can update its firmware and *possibly* the same thing if you want to restore it. Try restoring it anyways and if it asks to be plugged into an external power source i.e. the wall socket then you know you will need the firewire cable + plug that comes with it. If it dosent ask and restored itsself then yay, awsome free working ipod
