Hi, all :).

Today, I got an iPod (20GB, black and white screen, I couldn't tell you what generation it is, it's the first time I held one :p) from a friend of mine. He told me it was broken (he didn't tell me how), and I could keep it, because he'd get an 80GB version this Christmas anyway (he's rich :p). Well, I started it up, and it displays the apple icon, followed by a folder with an exclamation mark. I don't know what that means, but I thought someone here might.

I don't have any stuff for it, and I'm not rich, but if you think it's fixable, I'm willing to get some stuff for it. My budget is ?15, because that's all I have. I also have ~$4 in my PayPal, so that's all the reward I can give to a potential problem-solver. :)

Thanks in advance. :)

EDIT: If the problem-solver would need something photoshopped (don't ask me to code, a monkey with two fingers on crack cocaine can code better than me), I'd be more than willing to do that. :)

I would try to take it into an Apple store, they might at least how some clue if you have one near you.

Yeah, he went to an apple store with it, but it's out of warranty, and he thought they asked too much..

How would one do that? I've never actually had an MP3-player, so I wouldn't know the first thing about them :p.

I'll add it to the OP, too :).

you can do it without a firewire cable, you need the ipod cable for it to go USB and then you can use a free download of itunes. Sounds like the firmware just needs to be reloaded. Apple's website has FAQ's and how-to's on reloading the firmware so check out thier site.

So, I need an iPod to USB cable? What's the iPod connector called? :)

Jump on ebay and search for ipod cable. You should find a bunch of them on there for under $5. It's a proprietery connector, so you're probably not going to find one around the house. You could probably find one at your local electronics store, but it'll probably be much more expensive.

Doesn't the new iTunes (7.02?) also have the reset feature for the ipod that resets it back to factory settings?

Thanks, torpid :). I'll try :).

EDIT: It won't reset.. :(

Yep...a cable like that will allow you to sync. Doesn't your friend have the cable? He would have needed it to put his music on the Ipod.

Nope, he says he can't find it.. With the sad iPod icon, what are my chances of recovering it?

I have only one, though. And honestly, I'd never spend money on an iPod myself.

EDIT: Thanks, amdhunter, I'll try to score a cable :).
