Nirvana, definitely. Although R.E.M. had a big influence in the 80s in forming alternative rock.

As much as I don't like their music, I'd agree. Nirvana is attributed to creating "Grunge" which has given 90% of bands today their sound.

I was going to say. REM influenced the 80s and Nirvana, the 90s. Although REM put out good music in the 90s, it was in the 80s that they had their best and most influential music.

Nirvana, even though I hate them and they are brutally overhyped. I guess that's what happens when you kill yourself, though.

The hype was pre-suicide. I can't tell you how many people I ran into from 95 on that said they stopped listening to Nirvana or it wasn't the same or blah blah blah.

Yeah they were pretty popular before he offed himself, but I'm so tired of hearing the same damn nirvana songs played on the radio every day, as if they're some stairway to heaven-like classic. damn. They were trendy at the time but musically they are not that great if you really get to the meat of them.

Nirvana- that first album rocked. But I liked ALICE-n-CHAINS. Although I think PEARL JAM defined that era better.

I liked metallica and pantera awhole lot more that that grunge $hit!

Skoorb... every time I read your posts I either agree with you completely or disagree with you completely. No middle ground ever.

This is one of the time I disagree.

That's the most retarded thing I've ever heard. Overhyped? You think his death made them big? Sure, it made them bigger, but they were HUGE and HYPED way before he put the gun in his mouth.

As for your lower post, I can see you're getting into that fvcking tired schtick of "they're just a bunch of power chords..." Get over it. Who cares if it's easy to play?! That's not the point! The point is, it moved you (me, anyway, and a bunch of others). It begged to be listened to. There's just something about his gravelly voice and the INCREDIBLE drumming by Dave Grohl (you can't deny that, can you?) that just works. Listen to their Unplugged album... he can't hardly hit half the notes he's trying to hit, but it still just has a great quality to it.

But why bother arguing abou this voice? Johnny Cash and Bob Dylan don't sing any better, and they're both legends (though, granted, I'm not comparing them to Kurt, just saying that voice isn't all-important).

Well if it's between the two, Nirvana. It's hard to say whether grunge music would have taken off without them, although those who lived in seattle during the time might be able to answer that better.

I'd also like to submit radiohead as an option. Nirvana had a song or two that "was" the 90s, but Radiohead had a couple of entire albums.

A song or two? What about the rest of Nevermind? Or In Utero?
