I like 'em both. Monster and Nevermind are both classics. I don't really think R.E.M.'s sound defined the 90's more than Nirvana's though.

Nirvana, definitely. Although R.E.M. had a big influence in the 80s in forming alternative rock.

REM did almost every one of their songs based on political events of the time. REM, by far. Nirvana had a much smaller group of people that they were "advertising" to.
