You don't have to make intelligent posts to become an Elite Member.
Apparantly not! It's obvious in a few other 'Elite Members' I've seen on here before too. Looks like their little club is a joke with no credibility. Glad I'm not a member, and am honored to not have been invited. That means a lot to me.![]()
Being that most of the elite members here are worthless, it makes you wonder about the quality of the people that idolize them enough to give them the title "elite."
Yea, sour grapes for me, because my life long dream is to be an elite member on an Internet forum.I usually only read OT & P&N these days and if you read the posts of people carrying the elite title, you'd be hard not to agree that they are some of the worst members here. Maybe elite signifies they are the best of the worst...![]()
As a Finance guy, I have to say that I love your sig.Originally posted by: LunarRay
Folks who have been given the 'title' Elite must have provided great amounts of their time and energy to further one or more objectives of the forum and must have done it with the thanks of the then existing forum members and administrators. They deserve the recognition from a grateful forum.
What these folks post in a P&N, OT or other sub-forum has not to do with the obvious effort and expertise in another sub-forum..
Be nice..![]()

Elite in the early days of the forum actually ment something. Then they starting giving it away in a sort of popularity contest. It's best to just ignore it now, it doesn't mean anything.

The way I see it, the kid is way more "African" American that probably all the black kids at the school. At least he's from Africa, I doubt any of the black kids at the school have ever even set foot in Africa.

It is probably wrong to propagate racial division through awards like this, but it is morally criminal to make a joke of it. Apartheid was a very recent phenomenon in South Africa. This particular kid or his "innocent" family might be racially blind, but claiming that he is African-American and deserves the award is actually worse than instituting meaningless awards like this. He should not be eligible for the award. The award should probably be discontinued since it is only provoking the white majority in the school and probably not helping any of the black students there. Your ancestors* may have played no part in slavery and you are justified in feeling frustrated about reverse-racism. But an overwhelming number of blacks in the United States have a past that is filled with racial discrimination towards them. In the midst of all your self-pity , spare a thought for them.

EDIT: I think it's the adults have an antiquated idea about instituting racial equality. I wonder in how many schools the kids are allowed to talk to each other about racial differences and allowed to resolve them on their own. Black kids could understand the unfairness and counter-productive effect of having a blacks-only award if their peers discussed it with them. If the 16-year old white kid and his moron friends knew what the problem with the award was, they should have been permitted to discuss it with the 56 black kids in the school and convince them why it was not a good idea. That's usually the direction civilized thought takes. In India, they take the easy way out. You learn to deal with quotas at a very young age and then it doesn't hurt so much when it screws up your life because you are already prepared to fight twice the fight of your opponent. But those kids in this story only worsened the racial divide and if you cannot see it, you are not half as smart as you think you are.

Please ignore my posts, they are intended for intelligent people...
Like I said earlier, it's just semantics. But calling it "morally criminal" is taking it a bit far. Those kids are right to take issue with the award...more to follow.Originally posted by: athithi

The award should be discontinued because one of the provisions of it seem to be that members of an entire race are not eligible to win. Imagine how quick we'd all hear about it and how enraged we'd all be if a school started offering an outstanding student award and said that black kids were ineligible to win.The award should probably be discontinued since it is only provoking the white majority in the school and probably not helping any of the black students there.
I feel sorry for black slaves just like I feel sorry for the Aztecs and Armenians and Jews.Your ancestors* may have played no part in slavery and you are justified in feeling frustrated about reverse-racism. Well then I must be stupidBut those kids in this story only worsened the racial divide and if you cannot see it, you are not half as smart as you think you are.

In the end, it's really just a matter of semantics though.... I guess "Distinguished Indigenous, Sub-Saharan African American Student Award" wouldn't fit so nicely on a plaque![]()

It's interesting to learn that the term "African-American" was coined to denote all people that originated out of Africa (thanks Moonbeam, for helping me identify my true ethnicity) and not as a socially-acceptable alternative for the term "n*gger". Whaddaya know! You learn something new at AT every day!
Maybe the OP would've been happier with the label "The people formerly known as n*ggers" :disgust:
Hey , that's not a bad idea to put down where it says other "Former African". Doesn't it bother anyone else that we have all these forms where you put down your race/ethnic when all that is not supposed to matter?
I just filled out Job application paperwork this morning and there was 3 different sheets of paper with all these same questions just worded slightly differently.

Those race forms are there so that the employers can see if your white or black....and then toss your application out if your white since they've probably found a black person who can meet thier AA quota.
And thats why i refuse to fill out the race forms anymore, hiring should be based on merit and not on race or fullfilling some over payed boss's quota system.

Just because you find a statement distasteful doesn't mean it's unintelligent.
Thanks MonkeyK, that was nice of you. Of course, by your name I'd assume you might be just a bit more open to the notion you're an African ape. I keep telling these folks that I'm a mirror but they don't seem to get it. The way old ignorant me sees it is that when I reminded folks that they aren't so high and mighty, dare I use the word elite, by reminding um of what they really are, they got all defensive cause I knocked off their crown. And being blind and all to the realization that what we hate is what we really are, they immediately seen that elite in me, projected out there on the mirror that's me. So when they was feeling contempt for elite old me, what they was really feeling, and trying not to feel was their own eliteness, but the phoney kind, being pulled away. They don't know that being an African ape is like being in heaven, especially when the tree is full of bananas. Have one.

If they're somewhat smart, they usually keep racial data for hiring practicies in preparation for lawsuits. Any company today is subject to lawsuits based on racial discrimination in hiring. The racial data is there so they can hold it up and say "if you look at the data, we've been blind to race." Hiring someone based on race is just as legally culpable as refusing to hire.
It's also useful to spot racial skews before they get out of hand. Each person has his or her own biases and it's not wise to screw over the company based entirely on the subjective opinion of one employee. The same thing happened to the U.C. system with the hiring of professors. In a nutshell, one guy got curious and discovered a slowly increasing tendency to avoid hiring "Asian" professors. The problem was brought to light and addressed before any "serious" complications arose.
