see, this is where you suck as a trainer. instead of letting the other guys rant about "taking him outside", you couldve used that as an oppurtunity to train the new recruits on how to deal with a customer that may use certain words that could be misconstrued by those of lesser minds and deemed offensive.

but no, you went completely retard and ran to atot. figures...

this thread makes no sense, you kids, get out of my yard!!

No.

no? no what?

if it didn't orginate from poland, then what is the origin of the word?

Ghetto
Etymology

The word "ghetto" has been used in numerous contexts and carried various meanings in its history, yet the first use of the word is somewhat unclear. According to the Oxford English Dictionary, the term is of uncertain etymology but is probably Italian in origin and was perhaps used for the first time in Venice, circa 1516, to describe a neighborhood on the site of the city?s foundry.

The first recorded written use of the word occurred in 1611 in Coryat?s Crudities, in which he describes "the place where the whole fraternity of the lews (sic) dwelleth together, which is called the Ghetto." After this initial use, the word appears infrequently in written form until the late 19th century, when the social landscape of city becomes the subject of many authors and scholars.

The etymology of the word has already been posted several times in this thread.

okay first off,

why anyone would refer to anything as "ghetto"? it's ridiculous, but that is besides the point. I am a trainer for nextel (not sure if i mentioned that before). One of the white male New hires in my class refered to a store in my town as "ghetto" of course the african americans in my class took offense to this (which they should), and were threatening to take him outside and get to the bottom of what he thinks ghetto is.

Think about what you say people. When you call a ran down, poor neighborhood/establishment "ghetto" what are you really saying? Think about it.

especially if i'm your suporvisor at that moment, i have better things to worry about.

You are an idiot. Oh ya, and a bigot. I will attempt to waste little time outlining various ways...

1. You say 'white' people cannot use a word. That's offensive to white people while protecting the offense of black people. That's not in-line with the real intentions of political correctness.

2. You are ignorant to the origins of the word 'ghetto.' Ghetto has been used to refer to run-down quarters of cities where Jews and other minorities were restricted in the Middle Ages. In the US, it started in the late 1800's and early 1900's where mass amounts of immigration caused economic problems for large cities. These immigrants had their own culture, language, and very little money. Thus, it was necessary for them to band together in their own areas - often with entire families living in single rooms.

3. Meanings of words change. Gay typically means homosexual now. Ghetto colloquially means run-down. Everybody knows that - and so do you. You imply understanding what a person means when they describe a store as ghetto. Thus, you cannot claim ignorance to his use of the word.

Now, you are entitled to your opinions and you chose to voice them. However, I am entitled to mine - and my opinion is that you deserve ridicule for stating an opinion that is easily refuted, has no bearing, and incites racism in the name of prevention of racism. You need to think more.

Couldn't have said it better.

Maybe that's where part of the "racist" element of the word ghetto also comes into play for some people... as another word for what you describe is

"jerry-rigging", or, "n***er rigging". The latter, of course, being quite racist and offensive.

But, back to the original subject at hand... ghetto even today doesn't necessarily refer to a predominantly all-black neighborhood. In Cleveland we have several "ghettos" which are comprised primarily of Slovenian immigrants...

That's the thing, the ghetto is not positive. No one said it was, and just b/c it isn't a positive way to describe something, doesn't mean it automatically becomes offensive. I realize that someone did get offended, but people get offended for all sorts of shenanigans.

Hey...shenanigans...you making fun of the Irish? I'm offended...😀

I think everyone is taking the whole PC issue way too far. You can't say anything now-a-days without offending someone. The only way to not be offensive is to not say anything...hey, there's an idea...

I also love the way the OP singled out whites. So it's ok if Asians say it? What about Hispanics? Arabs?

Way to stick your true colors out there for the whole world to see.

ghetto = poor, nothing racial at all. come to westminster where it is ghetto and asian.

Technically:

Ghetto = Majority of population is 1 minority race. ie. University of California Irvine = ghetto

Slum = Poor.

Its ok for them to use the terms Boy, the N word, and ghetto now.. but if a white boy uses ANY of them in ANY context its racist?

😕

Why the 😕 ? Maybe it's Southern thing, but yelling "Hey, boy" is often considered a racist remark. Usually depends on the tone, however.

Hmmm. My son is mixed. If I call him "boy" am I being racist towards my own son? 😕 😉

Can we add homies, yo, "g", wassup, shizzle, ho, crib, bling, and hoopdie to the list of words white people shouldn't use?
