white people should never use the word "ghetto"

okay first off,

why anyone would refer to anything as "ghetto"? it's ridiculous, but that is besides the point. I am a trainer for nextel (not sure if i mentioned that before). One of the white male New hires in my class refered to a store in my town as "ghetto" of course the african americans in my class took offense to this (which they should), and were threatening to take him outside and get to the bottom of what he thinks ghetto is.

Think about what you say people. When you call a ran down, poor neighborhood/establishment "ghetto" what are you really saying? Think about it.

especially if i'm your suporvisor at that moment, i have better things to worry about.

what is a ghetto in america considered to be? low income housing for afriacen americans.

so you saying ghetto = dirty and cheap, can be taken as african american = dirty and cheap

You're thinking to mathematically. You're saying that if the "ghetto" is A, Afro-Americans are B, poor and dirty are C.

If A = C, and A = B, then ultimately , C must equal B. This isn't math though, and that right there is generalizing waaaaay to much.

Just referring to a section of town as the "ghetto" should not, and is not offensive. If you add on to that, it could get offensive.

What's offensive is the fact that you automatically think of black people when people refer to the ghetto.

I just said what I thought the definition was. If anyone takes that as somehow relating to race, then I'd say they're projecting their own biases.

the coment that set the entire episode is when the white guy referred to a gym in my town as "ghetto" the african americans in my class suspected that that meant it was in a poor african american neighborhood.. ghetto was not used in a positive way.

and i am a history major so i know all about the term ghetto and its roots. i also know the swastika was never paticularly evil untill the germans took it over. if i told anyone on atot that i drove through the ghettos of chicago today. it would be quite clear where i was without clarifying

You are an idiot. Oh ya, and a bigot. I will attempt to waste little time outlining various ways...

1. You say 'white' people cannot use a word. That's offensive to white people while protecting the offense of black people. That's not in-line with the real intentions of political correctness.

2. You are ignorant to the origins of the word 'ghetto.' Ghetto has been used to refer to run-down quarters of cities where Jews and other minorities were restricted in the Middle Ages. In the US, it started in the late 1800's and early 1900's where mass amounts of immigration caused economic problems for large cities. These immigrants had their own culture, language, and very little money. Thus, it was necessary for them to band together in their own areas - often with entire families living in single rooms.

3. Meanings of words change. Gay typically means homosexual now. Ghetto colloquially means run-down. Everybody knows that - and so do you. You imply understanding what a person means when they describe a store as ghetto. Thus, you cannot claim ignorance to his use of the word.

Now, you are entitled to your opinions and you chose to voice them. However, I am entitled to mine - and my opinion is that you deserve ridicule for stating an opinion that is easily refuted, has no bearing, and incites racism in the name of prevention of racism. You need to think more.

That's the thing, the ghetto is not positive. No one said it was, and just b/c it isn't a positive way to describe something, doesn't mean it automatically becomes offensive. I realize that someone did get offended, but people get offended for all sorts of shenanigans.

You see, that right there is the offensive part of this whole thing. Not the word ghetto itself. You're so narrow minded its crazy. Its obvious that the ghetto = housing for blacks only in your mind. Lived in 1 city your entire life? Any race can live in the ghetto. You're right about one thing, trailer parks arn't the getto, but that doesn't exclude white trash from living in a ghetto.

It isn't just applicable to African-Americans, though. It is applicable to wherever low-income minorities live. There's a lot of Hispanic-centric places that people refer to "as the ghetto." It isn't a positive comment -- that's for sure -- but it doesn't apply solely to one race. I understand your point, however, but you have to remember that most people don't say it to entirely denigrate an area. It has become a common part of vernacular, and in doing so it is commonly used. A lot of people refer to their beater car as "ghetto." A lot of people refer to half-assing something as a "ghetto way." It doesn't mean it is solely talking about African Americans. It is talking about poor people in general -- and depending on where you live -- that may be some or a lot of African Americans.
