Trump just needs to do it, declare an emergency. It'll give him cover to re-open the govt, blame the Wicked Pelosi & keep the right wing talking heads off his back. Whether it will actually create any Wall! or not really doesn't matter at this point.

What's really happened is that the Wall! has become an abstraction, a symbol around which the deplorables can rally for years to come. It's a form of denial.
 
Even if there were somehow a determination that the migrant crossings are now a national emergency, using emergency funds to build a border wall is non-sensical. At best, it will take years to build a wall. That's not an emergency intervention. Troops, emergency hiring of border agents, etc. could be argued for using these funds. Not a wall.

There are many ways to solve the immigration issue other than a wall but liberals want nothing to do with it. So you get the inferior solution i.e. the wall. We have to end sanctuary cities and prevent illegals access to housing, education, drivers licenses etc.... Enough deterrents and people will lose the will to come to the US illegally.

Imagine if we have a very open legal immigration policy and those that follow it have a good chance to become Americans. There are other ways but the fact is we have gone decades without our leaders doing anything about it. It seems like a topic that both democrats and republicans could align on but literally they take opposite sides. Democrats = pro illegal immigrations, Repubs = enforce immigration laws.

That's correct. The liberals want nothing to do with it which is why they voted to give Trump all that money for border security as long as it wasn't used for the wall.

liberals want nothing to do with solving the immigration issue....citation needed. First it would be good to decide just what the "issue" actually is. Based on GOP supporters I know, the issue to them is hordes of gang members, rapists and terrorists swarming across the border.

Second of all, I'm not particularly "liberal", I'm an (I) voter, but I do believe in solutions that fit the problem. And the problem is being vastly exaggerated in order to get terrified people to vote in certain ways. And it's working.

Until that is corrected, I certainly am not going to support GOP efforts on immigration. I don't know what the Dems might do.

Trump can declare an emergency all he wants to. The power of appropriating funds for almost anything belongs to Congress. Trump declaring an emergency to build a wall will be contested beyond his Presidency. The man is an idiot.

Trump got beat rather badly. He'll fare worse in a rematch. Dunno what he'll do, but he probably won't shut down the govt again. It was a great distraction from his other problems while it lasted.

The Furies will be upon him rather shortly, I suspect. I kinda figure Rudy is trying to get himself fired before they arrive, too. I mean, he can't quit & help Trump look good at the same time.

If he wins an broad power of emergency declaration, Democrat presidents can then use it to declare the real emergency of out of control drug prices and impose price caps.
 
If the wall got built it could be occasionally breached which has been mentioned in this forum before. Wonder if anyone who knows about international relations could comment on the possibility of foreign countries financing undocumented migrants to destroy areas of the wall. And providing advice and expertise to do so.

Wouldn't seem that hard to do with all that money and creativity imo. And the brains and operational experience of those foreign countries could also help them cross the border at rugged mountains where the wall isn't planned even by strong conservative planning. That's assuming the wall was built along all the easy to moderately difficult terrains.

Yeah, if you look at this year's Mexican budget bill it already has some money set aside to hire Mongols to take down the wall.

Why would foreign countries do it?

If cartels build submarines in the jungle you can guarantee they will find everyway around, under, over and through a stupid wall. They'll provide all the funding and expertise necessary.
