We may disagree on religion, but I understand that your experiences are quite different from mine.

So I get that the teacher might understand things different, based on their experiences. I just dont know if that will carry over into what is taught. I get that a different message in your opinion is conveyed, but I dont think the receiver will feel the effect, as they have not been though it.

I've never experienced "racism"...I'm only 32. But I've experienced forms of prejudice.

I think the best person to learn the negative affects of racism from are those who experienced it.

Non-minority doesn't have the life experience to teach minority studies class
Current teach is non-minority
Therefore current teacher shouldn't be teaching this class.

Not true "racism" like my forefathers, no, though I've worked IT in Technical Support for almost 10 years, and can count on probably one hand how many black co-workers and bosses I've had.

That's not to say I haven't had any racists co-workers or bosses, but I don't think I've personally experienced what I think racism really is.

You are grouping all white people into the same category whereas if you are white and grow up in south Texas you are a minority that is disliked just as much as any other and also growing up in poor school systems and DO know what it is like. This is also true in any neighborhood where other races are the predominant race - which there are plenty in America. So saying a white person couldn't possibly understand is flawed... like saying all white people come from privileged families/life when actually a lot of white people have their own family history filled with famine, migration, slavery, oppression, and working hard to build something from scratch when their ancestors came to America and even after.

The thing about History and why someone doesn't need to be a particular culture to teach it; is because like all subjects - it is taught from a book. Unless it is a debate class; personal lives and views should stay out of the classroom; especially under college age. In this case they are also picking a well qualified teacher to teach and they are dismissing him for possibly a less qualified teacher who will not teach the kids near as well just because he isn't their color... it promotes the same type of thinking they are trying to get rid of.

I didn't have a chance to read all these comments. I was blocked for posting for days from this forum. By someone that deliberately worked to misstate my position on this issue.

When I commented, I was commenting on the article linked. The reference to 'They' was to the people saying that whites shouldn't educate blacks, and Hispanics.

IMHO, it shouldn't matter what race a teacher is to teach a subject. But the article was full of people that want a race test for teachers. This will do nothing but further divide the country, and I thought the supreme court ruled against separate but equal education. Now these people want blacks to teach blacks? What total stupidity, and its worth noting that this group was gained an audience, and there concerns had to be addressed. They should have been told to buzz off.
