nope. Even Mohammed was far more tolerant of other religions than any other nation at his time. You were encouraged to convert to Islam, of course, b/c of the tax benefits, but no ill-will was harbored for those that were not. Also, Sala'hadin was easily the most open and tolerant leader when in control of the Holy Land.
The thing is, if you converted, you couldn't convert back.
That's when you're head is gonna come off.
That's the ancient muslim world. Somehow, I doubt that the modern one would play as nice with non-muslims if they didn't have to (ie, there were no non-muslim nations whom they have to play nice with diplomatically).
I've known people who've come from mainland China and grown up under the regime. From what they've said, China all the way. Despite the communist system, the Chinese are actually intent on technological progress and making the lives of their people better. Okay, I'll grant you the way they do it is questionable at times. Still, there aren't grudges held from centuries past that'll get you blown up for a minor inconstancy in worshiping the same invisible sky being or such. Sure, it's more dicey politically, but I'll take politics any day over religion as a controlling force.
