North Carolina, there is no debating this.

Whole hog, chopped, little bit of vinegar sauce. Nothing can come close in comparison.

So, as a Californian, in a way I'd like to say include them, and they are. And I can point to all kinds of bbq places many think are great.

But I think most are overrated. But then again most places in other states are as well.

One place I like is call "Emil Villa's", a small chain. There are some great places in various states, though. But I have a bias against anything with a mustard taste.

They're nearby, $26 for a slab of ribs dinner. Serves 1. And the BBQ sace is great.

Anyone remember a chain named Love's BBQ? The BBQ wasn't that good but the beans were unlike any anywhere else, amazing. They have one branch left - in Indonesia.

this thread's inspired me to make some deep fried ribs today with Famous Daves Sassy Chipotle sauce. Smoked are indeed the best, but I had a deep fried rib at the San Diego fair last month and it was damn tasty.

A few weekends ago I smoked a pork shoulder using apple and cherry wood. The shoulder was only mopped with apple cider vinegar, brown sugar, and black pepper.

Once done we sliced the pork rather than shredding it.

One word: magical.

Sorry, but chopped is shit. Pulled straight off the pig is the only way to go.

Man, we got a whole of travelers over here. I suspect you guys have been to every little corner of every single state in order to decide who has "the best".

News Flash: There is no such a thing as "best ANYTHING"

you go into most BBQ joints in NC, it is going to be chopped after being pulled off the pig. There are a few awesome dive places that don't do this, but it is more or less standard.

It's pretty much the same thing, anyway. Whether the meat is served in chunks or chopped on a block, it's the same meat.

Well, the only time I really eat barbecue is during Christmas when my dad cooks a pig in our BBQ pit out back. Pulling the pork straight off the pig while it's still in the pit is orgasmic and chopped meat just cannot compare.

I tend to stay away from most BBQ joints here in SC because the ones I've been too have put way too much vinegar in the sauce. My aunt brought some from Georgetown a few months back and the meat was just dripping with what tasted like nearly pure vinegar.

I've only had BBQ in Kansas, Missouri, and North Carolina and North Carolina had the best of the three by far.

Honestly, as long as they have an SEC school they have good bbq. I grew up with the sweet tomato based bbq but sometimes I like the tangy South Carolina style too.

Just don't try to venture outside the SEC or you start getting blender meat and the like...

They're discussing best BBQ, not fried chicken. :D I'm sure fried ribs are delicious. You can deep fry anything and make it good. Even old pair of tennis shoes would probably taste good deep fried.

Spidey is correct.

no he has an opinion. Many don't like meat smothered in vinegar

Some of the better BBQ joints are in the places you might least expect. So if you limit yourself to just the usual states, you'll miss out on a lot of great places.

Now, if we're talking styles of BBQ, that's one thing, but the poll is strictly geographical.

I'm not a huge BBQ fan but my favorite "local" place is actually almost 60 miles away (across a state border) and has insanely good brisket.

Good thing about California BBQ is we have styles from all over. From Korean BBQ, to Texas, to Carolina, etc.

Also, a lot of the people who make BBQ here, have already done it successfully in other states, and brought it here for fortune and glory..... fortune and glory.
