Boxing I believe would be the overall best sport for fitness, go out and try to just shadow box for a warmup, its a nice change, and gets you warmed up for a run pretty quickly. I also think Wrestling is also very demanding.

I remember reading a long time ago (I think in SI for kids) that the most "in shape" (not sure how they determined that) atheletes were beach volleyball players followed by tennis players.

Soccer was pretty good, but "plain old" running got me in much better shape. I'm going to try and add some boxing elements to my daily regimen, shadow boxing itself is actually pretty fun at the moment. I plan on getting a jump rope as well today.

Crew - uses the entire body, requires a lot of strength AND aerobic fitness.
or
Rugby - you have to be hard, fast, strong, and able to run forever.

swimming / water polo ... I was thin, only 220 pounds when I did these things regularly.

Now I am not thin (280 pounds) ... and I do these things rarely. Also, I eat a lot less then I used to.

WTF? Boxing? There are like a eleventy billion training exercises with boxing, including weight training and running to get that "overall" effect.

I'd go with swimming.
edit: as a bonus, it's uber low impact, no knee worries there, like soccer/running.
