Swimming is known for using all the muscles in the body, so I would say it gives you the best allround upgrading.

Swimming is the best for overall fitness. Its low impact on your joints, but does miles to strengthen them... I started after 3 docs told me I was on my way to 2 blown knees if I kept playing football, they recommended it as therapy... i turned about to be a friggin dolphin in the water. Its anerobic, so you train your body to work on less oxygen... VERY good. Also you work your entire body. I used to swim for 2 hours then do an hour in the circuit room doing low-medium weight/high rep cycles. You'll get a sweet slick body... unfortunately swimming does add a few milimeters of fat all around due to the body needing fat to stay bouyant, so you get smooth muscles not cut ones... think seals.

Soccer and running you'll get good leg strength and cardio, but swimming gives total body strength plus excellent cardio... they wouldn't let me box since i have a glass nose, so i can't comment on it... but if you train hard you're body will be like a rock. my 2c.

Wrestling...by far the hardest , most physical sport around...look in about any physical conditioning book, mine from the class I took in college said it was the hardest, and after doing it for 11 years, I'm inclined to agree

interesting, i've never heard about "smooth muscle" from the layer of fat from swimming.

Soccer
Boxing
Swimming
Running

I know Boxing doesn't seem to fit, but man, those guys are running, working on footwork, hitting the bags as well as lifting weights. I'd say that a Boxers overall fitness is pretty darn good. Any other sports?

boxing for overall fitness...but it's boring.

soccer or hockey for overall fitness and having fun.

running is great, but it does not develop your whole body.

Not like a diff type of muscle, just the look. Muscles will be rounded and smooth, no hard lines like body builders, and its because the body develops a layer of fat for bouyancy... put a 15% body fat person in a pool, then put a 8% body fat person in a pool... one will float much better. Compare pictures of Olympic Boxers to Olympic Swimmers to see what i mean.

Olympic boxers are more cut because they spend considerably more time lifting weights and less time doing cardiovascular exercises, like swimming and running. Olympic swimmers are more "rounded" because swimming doesn't build any appreciable amount of muscle. Swimming, like running, is mostly a cardiovascular excersise, where longevity and overall fitness is more important than muscle strength and size.

It was the first "sport" that went through my mind.

Running is the best for overall fitness though. Primarily because you don't need a pool or a mtn bike or anything other than feet! It's bad for the knees and back though....

i don't see how that is best for overall fitness... sounds like that is best for overall simplicity.
