REally i know nothing about video setups.

I plan on using a laptop cooler under the receiver or over it to keep it nice and cool.

Passthrough be nice in standby mode so not always have to turn it on but i dont know if possible.

Really dont have a budget but dont see the point in spending alot since i have been fine with a 12" sub and maudio monitors hooked up to back of pc till now.

Here is what have so far.
2x 12" sub cheap fosgate
2x 55T polk side channels?(slick deals 99 each with 50 rebate)
1x infinity pc351 Center speaker(189 )
2x maudio av-30 (prob wont be connected but thats what i was using with the 2x12")
Receiver will be connected to.
270x crossfire in pc
xbox360
39" LG monitor / mt750 optimo led projector.

also wonder which HDMI cables should buy as recently the cheap ones seem to break on the heads when unplug replug.. Thanks so much for replies.. really would like spend 200 but 300-400 is fine i guess if it lasts ;(

This is a good one. Note that the E300 has been on sale recently at both Best Buy and Amazon for $199, so a little patience might save you some good money.

i see them on ebay for 270 (wonder if ebay will give warranty **authorized seller** .. i wish saw them on sale ;) but i guess i can wait a week and see if gets cheaper or not.. hmmm THANKS

Yeah, hopping on the sales on this has been tough as both were one-day sales I believe. My dad was in the market for a new AVR and called me about the Amazon sale (which was around 3 weeks ago). By the time he made a decision, the sale was over. But it went on sale for the same price at Best Buy just a week later (for a single day) and he jumped on it. I just took a look and was surprised to see that neither of these sales were mentioned on slickdeals (which is where I typically set up deal alerts for specific products).

If you have a Frys near you, the E300 has occasionally been on sale for $199 there as well.

It's simple, do you need 7.1? Mostly it's not that useful, especially in your case, imho 5.1 is enough

You must be living really far from their warehouse... for me it was less than 200 with shipping

I've also been looking to replace a 1997 JVC AV receiver and came across this CNET chart on 2013 receivers. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/pub?key=0AhtQ0KI9vZ0PdHpxR2xkUm1rdG5SR3RDUU9heU9zTnc&single=true&gid=0&output=html
They are 2013 models but there are some very good deals on some of them now.
As posted the Denon AVR-E300 is $199.99 at Best Buy and Amazon. You can get an additional 5% off at Best Buy if you link through ShopDiscover.
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/denon-875w-5-1-ch-3d-pass-through-a-v-home-theater-receiver/7874046.p?id=1218861655308&skuId=7874046
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00B7X2OV2/ref=nosim/?ascsubtag=FWcl2po0&tag=fatwalletcom&linkCode=as1

The Yamaha RX-V475 refurb is also available from Fry's for $199.99 shipped, 1 year warranty.
http://www.frys.com/product/8032004?site=sa:adpages%20page:p6_FRI%20date:041814

Not on the chart but still a good buy is the Yamaha RX-V375 from Newegg for $199.99 + $1.99 shipping. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=0MJ-0022-00010
Limited time Shell Shocker deal: $189.99, free shipping

I went with the Denon AVR-E300 from Best Buy. It's new, has a 2 year warranty, and I since I live in TN I would still have to pay sales tax for purchases from Amazon and Newegg.
I only need 5.1 and don't need wifi (already have it on my blu-ray player and Panasonic P55ST60 plasma TV).

I also get all my HDMI cables from Monoprice.

Edit 4/20: Prices on the Denon AVR-E300 are back up to $283. at Amazon, $400. at Best Buy

Would probably buy a refurb e400 from accessoriesforless over the new e300. Worth the modest premium.

Key upgrades over the E300:

* 7 channels of amplification rated at 90 watts/ch into 8 ohms, with the ability to assign the two extra amp channels
* One more rear HDMI input, for a total of 6 (5 rear / 1 front)
* Two extra analog RCA audio inputs (4 total), including one dedicated "CD" input intended for an audio-only source
* Adds a component video input
* Removes composite video output, but not needed because....
* Video conversion of analog inputs to HDMI output
* Video scaling up to 4k resolution (and supports 4k passthrough)

* Web browser control officially supported
* Zone 2 functionality (powered by internal amps via Amp Assign)

People who have bad experience will complain, people how have good experience will not necessarily write reviews... lot of folks in avsforum have good experience, have not come across any complaints there yet. And remember that you are buying refurbished products, not new ones, so chances of issues will be high. Also you have to look around at the reviews of new models of the same products before you buy, sometimes they are lemon prone to begin with.

Also you have to look around at the reviews of new models of the same products before you buy, sometimes they are lemon prone to begin with.

Yet decent places like Amazon, Newegg, B&H, ABT Electronics and far more reputable companies are able to keep a high resellers rating. I understand the whole "more bad people write bad experiences", but if you run a good company with provide proper CS, you can keep a decent rating overall.

Also, any returned product that you have issues with, regardless if it was shipped free, they will make you pay for the shipping cost back to A4L. Even for defective items.

"Defective Returns
Defective Products returned to us for a refund will be credited to your original form of payment less our actual cost we incurred in connection to shipping your Product to you regardless of any amount you may have been charged including promotional "Free Shipping"

Which means they charge you what they say they paid to ship it to you, and what you have to pay to ship the item back. So you could be out almost $100 for absolutely nothing.

So you're saying there is a high probability of product failure and you're left having to ship a heavy item back and pay for shipping to have it fixed or to flat out return. People really need to read the return policy and WHY they have a negative rating before defending them.

Buyer Beware for a reason. Know what you are getting into.

Amazon's Gold Box today is the Denon X1000 for $300. Great choice on the audio side, with MultEQ XT room correction. Compared to its big brother the X2000, it's missing 4K support, 7.1, and analog video input to HDMI out. Still, since no one uses component video any more, it's great if you don't need 4K.

Same price from Crutchfield, free shipping, no tax for most; and Best Buy.

CNET's best bang for your buck receivers: http://www.cnet.com/topics/av-receivers/best-av-receivers/

The Sony STR-DN840 is $429. new, free shipping from eBay.

The Onkyo TX-NR626 was $432. shipped from NCIXUS a few days ago. OOS now.
I thought about getting this receiver since it has phono inputs. I have a Dual CS604 TT/Shure VN15 Type II cartridge and a lot of vinyl. Then I thought, I don't need 7.1, all those legacy connections (unless you still have a VCR, CD player, or tape deck), wireless (have it on my blu-ray player and Panasonic P55ST60 plasma TV), and Dolby Pro Logic IIz; and I can get a cheap preamp for the TT.

I bought my e400 from accessoriesforless. First time dealing with them. They sold it cheap, packed it well, and shipped it super quick (I got it in 2 days). I dont know what they could have done better. But I also didnt bother reviewing them.

I would have to say, if you don't need 7.1, this is a great choice. I've got the x-4000 and love it.

Another fun fact, if you download the iPad (maybe android as well) app, you can change sources, volume and all sorts of things from another room. You can also stream things from your iPad and YouTube (probably others as well.

This is sort of fun when you're in another part of your house and you can turn on 27 Dresses in the middle of your children watching a movie. :D the screams are hilarious.

+1 on the 840, just from the looks of it.

If you value sound quality you should stay away from Sony products.

Here is my experience with Sony receivers:

Opinion on Sony Receiver?

I ended up with an Onkyo and later a Denon, both much better than the Sony.

That's what I have read too about Sony and even Pioneer. minimum should be Onkyo or Yamaha, Denon is a bit better and Marantz is the next level.
