Which "next new thing" are you waiting for?

I want to build a system to replace my P-III 733mhz Coppermine system. At one point, I told myself I was going to wait for serial ATA, USB 2.0, new CPUs, and a few other new things to become available before getting a new PC. I realize now that I'll be waiting forever before all that happens, so I'm curious to hear what you folks think is the ONE thing worth waiting for before building a new system.

Doesn't matter to me whether you are waiting for a new CPU or a new kind of HD activity LED in the case. What is the the one and only thing worth waiting for, and how long are you willing to wait for it?

Instead of better LCD's - I'm looking for IBM's new tech, the super-thin CRT. It's supposed to only be a few inches deep, if that! :)

I'm also hoping microATX and low-profile expansion becomes more of a norm so we can have the option of nice, small, compact desktop units rather than big, clunky towers. (Yes, there will always be a need for tinkerers towers!) But for most users, a small unit resting under the monitor takes up much less space and just plain looks nicer. Doesn't get in the way - it's right in front of you - not to the side or on the floor, etc.

Of course, working inside a tiny uATX case, SerialATA would be a very, VERY good thing!!!! :D

FFD LCD monitors and thinCRT's are nice, and all, but I'm talking about the guts of a desktop PC, not peripherals.

Let's limit this to what goes inside the box. ;)

Personally I am waiting for Hammer (or the first major price drop on Hammer heh) before building my next system.

I can understand people waiting for Hyperthreading (or official support of it rather -- you CAN enable it in BIOS with current chips...).

Waiting for Dual DDR makes sense also, except for one thing: It's already been out 9 months, unless of course you mean affordable consumer grade Dual DDR motherboards, rather than just server-priced.

To the people waiting for SATA -- WHY?!?! I don't understand this one.

Solid state hard drives, 8 CPU Sledge Hammer setup, Nforce: Hammer Edition, and mRAM (or whatever RAM that IBM is making that doesn't lose information when powered off.)

Ever done a lot of work inside a computer? Ever have to almost FIGHT with those stupid IDE cables to get them just so...
Try that in a microATX case or smaller and you've got a nightmare. Tiny, tiny little SATA cables would be SOOooooo much easier to work with!!

Heh all you desktop junkies.

I'm waitting for Banias, Organic TFT screens, and Silver-Zinc batteries (don't like the idea of fuel-cells so much but we'll see). I'm telling you next year we could feesaibly see a 1 inch superslim be able to pack in enough power to actually LAN party with it.

On the desktop side
I'm waitting for SATA, and Prescott.

Ooh, just reminded me of something to add to the list.

my new list:

1. First price drop on Hammer (preferably SLEDGEhammer if it isn't TOO much more)
2. NV30
3. Dual Channel QDR or Dual DDR-II.

Doom III. :)

OK, it's not hardware but I'm currently satisfied with the hardware I have now so I don't really have a wishlist. AMD's Hammer sounds interesting though and it'll be good if it can deliver.

BTW, what on earth happened to your "Pez" Wingznut?

The first cheap, high OC potential Prescott or Clawhammer. Whichever next-gen chip offers best bang for the buck (if you include OCing) will be my next platform upgrade. Until then, I may upgrade my video card to GF4/Radeon 8500 :D

I think you guys are aiming way too low....

SATA, native on drives and motherboards
PCI-X, AGP would be practically useless
DDR-II, though dual channel sounds plenty promising
.09 micron manufacturing process

Small form factor a la Shuttle Barebones.
SATA native on all drives (hdd and optical) and mobo.
Either hyperthreading or hammer, whichever is better price/performace when I do upgrade.

Hammer !!!

But I really like Bennyd's idea. The only problem is that I have the money all the time (too much spending cash), and can't decide what is a waste.
