The longest non-stop session has to be quakeworld, sometime around 1998 or 1999. There were several times I played 18 - 20 hour sessions of QW.

Next would probably be team fortress classic, diablo II and now I am working on left 4 dead 2.

Probably DODs, way before the counter ever started on steam. Pretty sure had some 8-12hr sessions in there, but kinda rare as I just get tired of gaming after a few hours.

Summer of 09 I spent the day's watching stocks (no job), fixed dinner (maybe watched a movie on netflix), and then mostly played DODs until bed/sometimes throughout the day. Good times.

My wife and I played SWG for so long right at launch, I swore I was seeing glowing waypoints shooting into the sky when we actually did finally leave the house to venture to the grocery store. Scary.

:) If anything like it came out I'd probably lock myself away for a long time again. Hard to imagine something like that being successful these days though.

GW1 and BF1942. I remember starting GW1 with a bud during time off from work for xmas. We'd log in about the same time, start gaming. Take a short food/beer/cookie break (short enough to stay logged in) and then back it pretty much all day for like a week.

1942.. If I didn't have to run errands or go anywhere with the GF i could easily play that damn game for 12-15 hours at a time.

Diablo 2 and Lord of Destruction...

Nothing compares to the sheer amount of time I dedicated/wasted/invested (there's no "good" terms anymore, I think they all apply to some extent) with that game. It wouldn't be an exaggeration to say that if I compressed all the time I spent/wasted on it then it would probably end up being months (if not a year and plus) worth of non-stop sessions. I remember first buying D2 (vanilla) I believe during the summer of 2001 (not sure anymore) and "stopped" playing it (my first real "attempt" at quitting it) somewhere in 2005. I actually sold my copy (with LoD) at a local store at the time. Then the same year, maybe three or four months after I sold it I ended up buying it again (and brand new copy) and plunged into the addiction wagon (or call it obsession, maybe more of that than actual "passion") until - once more - I decided it was "finally time" to stop playing it, which was sometime in 2008.

My "journey" with D2 lasted approximately seven years of my life, and again no other games has come remotely close to that. Not only of the amount of time spent playing it to start with, but also to the "dedication" I had when playing it. Not only have I played it a crap load (of time), but when I did during the most "intensive" years (say between 2002 and 2005) I used to almost exclusively do that. It did negatively impact my social life. I managed to still go at work at the time... but I was so "obsessed" by it that I couldn't stop thinking about my next Baal runs and my newly-created characters (and their builds, etc) while at work. I came back home, barely took care of my real life priorities and jumped on my computer to be at it until the sun showed itself again the next morning. Being tired at work for lack of sleep due to a video game? Oh hell yes I know what that feels like believe me and it didn't last for only a week.

As for the highest number of hours put into it... in one sitting? That would be probably from late on a Friday after coming back from work, playing a good 14+ hours (keep in mind I usually had 8 to 10 hours of work on my shoulders on Fridays at the time when I came back home) non-stop (I.E. literally not standing up from my chair for that long not even to go take a drink) until finally I would have had to go to the bathroom, maybe take a drink, maybe blink my eyes a bit... then back at it until the early hours of the Sunday. I honestly don't even want to try to calculate how many hours I could spend on that thing I just have shudders when I think about it.

Yup... D2... heh, not exactly "proud" of having played "a game" [insert any name] for seven years or so. In retrospect I can only shake my head in shame when I think about it. But it's easy to say this now, because at the time I enjoyed every seconds of it. Put me back in that same context again and I wouldn't do any self-introspection to reason me out of it... I'd still be at it the same way. It is only now after I'm done with it that I realize. Damn you Blizzard North. I'm happy, actually, that D3 ended up being overall disappointing. I couldn't play it for more than maybe three months until I pretty much stopped playing it, good thing... yup... good thing.

D2 and LoD had the same stranglehold on me as well. It sucked me into it's world and never let go. I've been tempted to reinstall and just run around Mount Arreat looting and pillaging. D3 was cool, but it didn't come close to the tactile feel of D2 and LoD.
Hundreds, if not thousands of hours lost to that game. But as you said, not really lost. But they were definitely taken.

At a arcade at Salisbury Beach, MA, when I was a teenager I started a Asteroids game in the afternoon and played until the arcade closed that night on one quarter. When I walked away, I had those triangle ships all across the bottom to oblivion :)
Did the same thing at a Howard Johnsons near my house that had a few machines near the ice cream counter. It was great fun, also played Pac-Man until I got thrown out on one quarter a few times. I had read a book detailing certain patterns that were in original bios/versions of the game. Gave a certain edge.
At home, I had a Intellivision, they sponsored a contest for Astrosmash. High Score, take a picture. I had a Polaroid instant camera, my brother took the picture after 8 hours. My hands were numb, playing those little controllers. We thought we had a chance at 50,000 dollars, at least how I remember it :)
Don't have any PC stories as long, longest would be Quake 1, Half-life.

Used to play Pinball for hours at times, also. That used to be why I went to arcades.

Myth: The fallen lords was the game that got me. I must have spent the better part of my freshman year in college playing that game. There was one weekend where it was all I did from Friday at 5pm until Monday at 7am (when I had to take a shower and go to an 8am weekly exam). My roommate kindly ordered food from a pizza place a couple time for me which I quickly ate with one hand while continuing to play. I managed to get bathroom breaks in while waiting for all the players to join the game + the pregame setup time. I was ranked 3rd in the world and I was desperately trying to get into a match with the number 1 ranked person, but he kept leaving the match lobby before the game would begin and I never got to play. The interesting thing about the ranking system b.net used in that game was that you had to beat people above you to move up (well you could also move up if the people above you lost to a lower ranked player as well but really you needed to beat the guys above you, or simply not play for a couple days).

Warcraft 3: Frozen Throne.

Played with friends over Ethernet practically from sunrise to midnight. Lunch and dinner times were the only breaks.

Fun times...

Back when I had no commitments I used to play WoW 16 hours non-stop.

Now, the most I can get in is 4 hours, at the very most.

No, Civ IV the most. Definitely.

Wait, uh... Civ III the most. Absolutely.

Hours guys, hours during one session. How many? Some of you are just listing a game. Great, was it for one hour or 10?

I guess people are going by the thread title?

For me, it's the Civ series, mainly Civ 2. Spent at least one semester at university playing that, and studying in my spare time. :whiste:

Hundreds of hours of "just one more turn" ... Good times!

Guild Wars - 5.5 hours or so. There have been days where I play for 18 hours but never in a row.

Wow, I thought I was an addicted gamer. I don't think I ever played more than 4 hours without a break and that was when I played video games all the time. But I still took breaks, eat, lift weights, go running etc... Geez

Now, that said, I have had 12-16 hour gaming marathons. But there were at least 15 minutes breaks every couple of hours.

Baldur's Gate series: Remember when it came out, it was the time I bought my first PC with my own money. An awesome Pentium II 400MHz and something like a Diamond Monster 3D GFX! Good times! : 7-8 hours

FF2 on the SNES: I finished this game so many times and each time I tried to beat my time. My first game I finished in a little over 30 hours and the last I can recall was just over 10 hours with everything explored and done. : 7-8 hours

WoW Vanilla: I remember when we would gather, 4 or 5 dudes in the same place, at mine or any other, and we would play from 5pm to 5am the next day, with some breaks here and there to bring the circulation back on lol. We were mainly doing 5-man dungeons and group quests. THAT was awesome! : 12 hours

I don't have this patience anymore lol
