agree. Crysis 2 only gets knocks because of the gritty art design and people are comparing it to the beautiful island graphics of Crysis 1. But there's much more going on in Crysis 2.

Agree, C2's engine is just insane. Their art design might not have been the top, like TW2 or 100mods Skyrim, but engine-wise C2 is on a completely another level. And C3 is gonna be even better.

I only judge games during the time they are released and at the time of release Unreal was really unmatched IMO.

Just based off this list it's hard to say. Crysis 2 has the best looking surfaces, Battlefield 3 has the best lighting to make a realistic looking scene, Metro 2033 has the best shadow work and Ambient Occlusion, Crysis had or has some of the best foliage, The witcher 2 has great character models and great texture work, Once skyrim is modded it can have great looking landscapes from medium distances and pretty realistic looking textures on wooden structures.

For multiplayer, BF3 takes the cake. Modded Skyrim, Metro 2033, and the Crysis series in general are all in the top for single player.

Lately I have been impressed with the level of detail in the Far Cry 3 cut scenes and the game in general. Two gripes, though: it seems like the water and vegetation movement took a step back from Far Cry 2. The vegetation seems less responsive. whereas you use to really visibly rustle the plants in Far Cry 2, which was a nice touch. The waterfalls also look pretty bad. Overall, a beautiful recent game, though.

Looking forward, a less photo-realistic game that still looks really impressive is Bioshock : Infinite. Excited about that one.

lol @ crysis still being touted as having the best graphics. modded, it is certainly beautiful....at times. but outside of the jungles/forested areas, things can get pretty average, imo. textures in particular are pretty abysmal by todays standards. rygels so called "HD" textures is not even a full fledged texture update, they're merely vanilla textures which have been sharpened and darkened in photoshop.

crysis 2 with dx11 and maldo hd 4.0 textures + max settings in the maldo config is by far the best visuals PC has to offer at the moment. maldo actually took the time to redo nearly every texture in the game (took him over a year) and his textures are a whopping 4096x4096 in resolution. by comparison, crysis textures are a mere 1024x1024, and lower. art direction and world setting is a subjective matter.

witcher 2 on ultra settings + ubersampling is also highly impressive. BF3 comes in behind these two.

To me graphics should fit the game's context and setting of course, although a game can look superb but is extremely boring to play, or the other way around as well. It's all very subjective. This subject reminds me too much of the SEGA Vs. Nintendo days (or rather more precisely the 16-Bit wars).
Fancy graphics generally slows gameplay down for FPSs. My vote goes to Q3A, no stupid trees and stuff messing up your view.
