I agree that GTA IV looks insanely nice, when it is all modded up.

Well worth the play thru modded if you have not done so.

Well most games I wanted to mention have been posted.

Anyone agrees Just Cause 2 also has some great visuals?

Out of the box? Probably Witcher 2. Extremely high def textures and it just looks sharp. Crysis 2 with the HD textures looks nice as well.

Crysis seemed like the con of the century to me. It was a lot of Grass and sand - sand and grass - with some thick ,monotonous bushes and trees thrown in. Good graphics should be varied and interesting - with nuance. Crysis was just a bunch of shades of mostly brown and green with some blue sky/water shades. If a painter wanted do do something challenging beaches, grass and green jungles with dirt roads is hardly the best that could be done. Heck I haven't even played something like Batman Arkham City yet but it looks better than Crysis just from looking at YouTube.

It doesnt matter that graphics and artistic direction are different things because they work together to form the end result

I find Crysis to be incredibly overrated, because yes, it is technologically amazing, but the art is about as interesting as a brick, so whats the point?

Best looking game out there is Tera, running on Unreal Engine 3
That game just makes your jaw drop every single time you enter a new area, by far the best art Ive seen in a game, the environment just feels alive

Skyrim is pretty good, but still not at the same level

"OF ALL TIMES" seems a bit weird to vote...it should be like "nowadays"

cause i recall LOVING how Quake 3 looked when it first came out, all the rounded surfaces, the art style, the blood ...

The screen of Witcher 2 on the first page looks breathtaking. Wow. I didn't vote because I haven't played most of these games, but I was to try Witcher after seeing that. Amazing.

The only of those titles I've played extensively was BF3, so I guess I go with that, however you can have the best graphics ever and it'll still look bad without decent design and direction. Personally I find something like Bastion or Shank or Trine just as pleasing to the eye as any of the "super graphics" titles.

Definitely play The Witcher 2; not just because of the graphics, but because it's a great RPG overall. It really deserves more recognition.

Here's some more screenies.

The great thing is my wife and I are HUGE RPG fans so I could sell her on this pretty easily. :p Should I get the first one, too? Also, I have a gtx660, that should be plenty strong enough right?

While The Witcher 2 is almost universally regarded as fantastic, The Witcher 1 is much more divided. It's considerably older, isn't as polished, and has entirely different combat mechanics. The storyline is a bit more sedate (some people thought it was boring).

Personally, I loved The Witcher 1. The universe felt believable, realistic, and immersive. However, you'll meet many people on this forum who hate it. So it really depends. Maybe give it a try and see what you think? GOG.com has it for only $2.50 right now.

It's not critical to play TW1 in order to understand the storyline in TW2, but it helps. If you play TW1 and decide you don't like it, then simply continue on to TW2 and play that instead. They're two very different games.

Crysis 2 DX11 undisputably has the best graphics. It has the best lighting and shadow system of any of the game listed, and is the only game to feature real time local reflections and variable penumbra (on all shadows).

The Witcher 2's light and shadows look very poor in comparison to Crysis 2 DX11. But if you include artistry, then the Witcher 2 takes it.

The Witcher 2 has amazing art direction, and so does Batman AC.

agree. Crysis 2 only gets knocks because of the gritty art design and people are comparing it to the beautiful island graphics of Crysis 1. But there's much more going on in Crysis 2.
