namecheap's free whois privacy is only good for the first year, correct?

I'm using Yahoo right now, but I might transfer to Namecheap when it's time to renew. About half as much $$$ and everyone around here seems to love them.

I use domainmonger and have not had any problems.

What's a good FAST host (e.g. one that could withstand the ATOT effect ... lol)?

That depends on:

1) How much disk space/bandwidth do you plan on using? Let's be realistic.
2) What's your budget?

I use NameCheap for my domains. I like the account interface and the 1 year free Whois Guard.

I use Cernax for my servers.

namecheap is what i used for dartmans free web thingy. having no experience in web stuff i thought it was easy and most of all pretty damn cheap. i found a online coupon which knocked a buck off the fee. so i paid for 10 years for like 80 bucks.

You went with the 10 year plan and you have no experience? Sure hope you end up liking it. heh. I always do mine a year at a time because I never know when I'll lose interest in a certain thing.

Between the two which has a better sign up process and GUI?

I've been using godaddy for a few years, I only own a couple active domains though. Their gui is very easy to use, no complaints. I do recall that when signing up a new domain you need to be careful to not select any crap they try to sell you. No complaints here.

netfirms.com
because of their recent promotional offering for 2 domains + hosting for 10 bucks for the first year :)

I will need to move them to a permanent home afterwards though. I have used GoDaddy before but just for domain registration. I havent tried namecheap though, I guess ill move there next year when my netfirms offer expire from all of the good reviews in this thread.

Got some questions:

Whats the best (cheap) way to transfer domains... and how much am i looking for to spend if I want nominal hosting for 2 websites? They are just personal websites with mostly pics, and random stuff.

requirements:

~ decent storage space, im guessing about 10-20 GB (together for both)
~ bandwidth ... not sure but u can guess how much pics would take
~ seamless integration of both sites. (one thing i like about netfirms, there are basically 2 folders one for each site, so I can access with a single ftp login)

Since your expectations are unrealistic you'll have to stick with web host that oversells, a lot:

netfirms
dreamhost
1&1

Good luck :)

LOL, fixed

i really just need nominal storage space to store about 500 pics or so. I guess netfirms gives u 250gb, so i just threw that number out there without thinking.

500 pics? How large are they? You could easily get that inside 1 or 2 GB.

10GB-20GB disk space is still unrealistic if you're looking for a reputable web host.

What do you consider "cheap"?

just a number i threw out. Thats how much I would put on right now...but idea is as I take pics, i will keep creating more and more albums.

I can fit 500 in about 2 GB, but considering over a year...and all the holiday + bdays + random stuff...it might go up to 2000 by the end of the year ... so I am asking for about 10-20 GB of space.

hmm...whats realistic then? I was thinking of a long term thing where I would keep a family website with all our albums available online.

As of now, I just need about 2Gb of space now... so I guess 5GB for the first year. Maybe then I can start deleting old albums to add new?

Cheap = <50 per year including the 2 domain renewals.

What's wrong with those web hosts I mentioned above? They're cheap and work.

I personally significantly compress images for my web album. Those that want originals can get them from me via e-mail or FTP (I'll upload them for X days). I decided that it's not worth the price to keep "large" images online.
