Does that work with .us domains? I remember looking at a different registrar a few weeks ago and they claimed you weren't allowed to whois-block a .us.

According to Namecheap, WhoisGuard can't be used with .US domains.

What makes Namecheap so easy to use? Is Godaddy that much harder?

Send a quick e-mail to support@namecheap.com and ask them.

AFAIK I don't own any .us domains only

.com
.net
.org

Bah. Finally found something that said it's a government mandate to stop stealthing .us whois information. Guess I won't be buying that particular domain.

So I am still stuck deciding between Godaddy and Namecheap. I would only use the registrar for the registration of the domain names and would use a friend's hosting service.

I heard a lot of complaints how with godaddy you are only "leasing" your domain. Is there any basis in reality for these claims? Apparently godaddy has been know for simply cancelling your account and selling your domain name. Supposedly, they also make it hard to transfer domains away from godaddy.

For namecheap, there are not many reviews although they mostly seem to be positive.

Namecheap overall seems to be more expensive than godaddy.
(Partially, since they charge for Whois anonymity after the first year and godaddy offers a rebate on transfers.)

I use Godaddy because that's what I started with and I haven't had a good enough reason to switch.

Remember there are always two sides to every story. I'll bet you those people didn't renew their domain.

It's very important to use an email address you check frequently that doesn't receive a lot of SPAM. Or mark on your calendar one month before your domain expires.

GoDaddy is fine, go ahead and sign up with them. But if you ever try NameCheap you will notice a difference.

I am sure about that ... lots of complaints are usually rooted in some misstep by the complaining party.
Never nice to hear such rumors though ...

Here's a link to the controversies, I was referring to

If I already have 5 domains registered with GoDaddy, is there that much difference in the service to justify switching to namecheap? I really don't do anything with the domain names themselves outside of renewing them every so often...

I have only 6 or 7 domain names registered with godaddy for 10 years. Using coupons and promotions helped get the price down to around 5-6 bucks a year.

speaking of coupons, any out there for either for .net names.

Not really. Just make sure GoDaddy has your correct email address and you renew them before they expire.

I use eNom since they bought out BulkRegister, but BulkRegister is still a separate service. I've been with BulkRegister since the registrar breakup in 1999.

godaddy, because of fatwallet cash back :)

namecheap's private registration sounds nice, but if you're online you're gonna get spammed anyways

edit: with about 40 domains

What's your budget for web hosting?

I was reading that thread a few days ago, good info. I was hoping for more opinions without having to register for yet another forum. :p I saw it when I went to register the domain I had finally decided on.

My budget? Cheap. :p I'm not going to have anything huge.

No need to register for another forum.

What do you define as cheap?

I think Namecheap came up to ~$50 for 1 year of hosting, domain registration and whois guard. Somewhere around that ballpark.
