By way of comparison one of my freebsd machines has been chugging since about 2000 without any issues, as have two of my linux boxes.

I've had the same install for 3 years, across 3 different computers with no issues. You know maybe it's you...

I would love to see you guys trying to manage windows production envrionment. "Oh noes something's wrong with the MS SQL box!!!.... I know, lets format it and reload windows"

What could possibly compel someone to format monthly?

Would never happen...I'm not stupid enough to rely on windows for mission critical tasks. Everything that matters I do in Unix or Linux, and therefore NEVER have an issue. Microsoft products are simply inferior, period. Office is by far their least buggy solution, but it's still a bloated mess. Not to mention the fact that when I build a network for someone I have no (or very very very low) software costs allowing me to underbid pretty much everyone. Why do you think so many nations are going to purely _nix solutions for official networks?

No, it's not me. Everyone (or nearly) I know has the same issues. I usually end up doing 50-150 reloads a year for people when their systems crap out. ESPECIALLY people in IT...they're picky about keeping their systems running and they constantly reformat...at least all the ones I know do.

QFT

I've tested about 100 different pieces of hardware in this build, and replaced the HD twice. I just image it onto the new drive and go. when I open programs all the way up, the lists fill the monitor at 1280 x 1024..:)

I don't have time to muck around and reinstall. If it is broken, I fix it.

It's been a few weeks or months (no longer ago than about December, certainly). I am really in need of a reinstall though - normally I'd be content to leave an XP install running for months/years, but like an idiot I keep forgetting and installing XP x64 on the same partition as my regular XP install, causing tons of files to be overwritten....lol :p

You're a fool - windows accounts for about 40% of all server machines sold and netcraft shows IIS to be running 20% of all websites out there. No real sysadmin would consider constant formatting to keep the computer running, it's just plain stupid. I suggest you read up on group policies and actually learn what you're doing....

That's when I put this particular computer together, using a refurbished Abit motherboard from Newegg and an Intel P4 pulled from a Dell PC deal.

I try to do it every month, i'm just late this time.

I have a cd i just pop in and it isntalls everything with every program i use, and my UI settings.

You use Ghost? Mine is 3/27/2006. I make a new system restore DVD using Ghost about once a year and like to reinstall the system about every 3 months. Coupled with a backup hard drive it's cake :D

Haha...what an appropriate thread. I actually just reinstalled Windows this morning...after wiping the 80GB HD overnight (took 11 hours using WipeDrive from Access Data Corp). My PC is three years-old and this is probably the 9th time I've reinstalled everything.

I know there are support groups out there for people like me...I just need to find one...

No need, non-windows systems perform flawlessly and are free. Doesn't get much better than that. Besides, I can generally backup and reformat a system a heck of a lot faster than I can work my way through all the myriad of bizarre issues which creep up...especially after having so many times where no one can figure out what's causing it or fix it. There's nothing as frustrating as spending 10-15 hours working with 2 or 3 different tech supports only to be told at the end, "Dude, I don't know what else to tell you, we're all out of ideas here."

Thanks, but no thanks. I'll do it my way.

From http://linux.coconia.net/addingXP.htm

After, the installation (of Windows XP) you will be left to search for, and install, such items as video drivers for you video card. Although, the installation provides a small number of utilities, games, etc, you still have to install and configure the bulk of your software.

So, you now have the difficult task of reinstalling and customizing, Microsoft Office, all of your third party software, such as, Adobe Reader, Photoshop, Virus protection, your printer drivers, etc, etc. This all takes a lot of time and effort, especially if you happen to have lost the disk that came with your printer that included the printer drivers. Even worse, you often find that the disk that came with your printer does not have the necessary Windows XP/2000 drivers.

So, reestablishing a Windows system is a royal pain in the ass. In contrast, if you are satisfied with only partially accelerated video drivers, reestablishing a Novelle SuSE 10.0, is pretty much all done in 30 or 40 minutes. However, if, for example, you have an ATI video card and wish to install the fully accelerated ATI drivers, this may take you forever, as the installation seems to have been deliberately sabotaged.

On occasions, getting Windows back to the way it was, has taken all day (and sometimes longer). When people tell you how easy Windows is to install, they as lying by omission, as they omit to tell you that the install is just the beginning of reestablishing a Windows system.
