Just for my own education, let me ask a question. I have owned six PCs over the last 13 years, and not one time have I had to reinstall Windows.

What is happening to people's PCs that forces a reinstall of Windows?

Nor on my Windows XP Home system. Wonder what I'm doing wrong?

maybe it's a winxp pro thing.

LOL.

I hope none of you are serious.

No, I'm being serious. I type "systeminfo" at the command prompt and receive the following message:

"'system info' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file."

Seriously.

%Windir%\System32\systeminfo.exe

Kranky :

Two obvious reasons, they load up their machine with tons of crap and catch virus's and Trojans from downloading p0rn.

Nothing is forcing us to reinstall. It's rare that XP will get so bad that it an install is not recoverable. However most people who use their computer for more than e-mail and word processing encounter slow downs after installing software on their computer. When defragging doesn't help there are only 2 options: live with it, or format.

This is my friends computer...

It has only been a month on my laptop and its still running quick as hell :) I defrag often though, and clean up the registry...

How do you clean up the registry?

Abexo
CCleaner
EasyCleaner

They're all free and work well with XP and 2000 (I've been using them for months with no probs).

An infinite number of issues. Slow downs, failiure to boot, random errors, new hardware (like motherboards), etc. In my current situation I can no longer post to my school online bulletin board. After three weeks of trouble shooting no one can come up with a cause or solution, though we know it's on my home system. Since there's no way to troubleshoot it further my only option is to reformat.
