Well something needs to "tip up".

and evidently wandering around without a clue :p

AMD was ultimately responsible for inviting 120 journalists to the AMD gig. To that we answered that we weren't entirely sure.

Was AMD going to open an office in Tunis, we were asked. We don't know the answer to that either.

But we do know that now 50 Tunisian journalists have been invited to this evening's celebrations here in Old Tunis. And the immigration officers were polite and charming because we didn't tip up with any cards. Because we don't know what's going on here, yet

that would be funny... if AMD tried to launch a card somewhere it is illegal. ;P

Hate to sound mean, but in recent history isn't this probably the worst time to be holding something like this in North Africa. I do realize the Tunisia has not had any problems, but there has been plenty of warning to terrorists and don't forget that the Spain rail bombings were organized by a Tunisian. I just feel that there security to stop something would much less than if it were here in the US.

FORMER EMPLOYEES OF ATI stressed that the graphics part of the company was just as committed to the channel as AMD was.

John Byrne, senior vice president of sales at ATI that was and who now works for AMD, said that AMD is just as committed to the channel as it used to be.

Next up, Rick Bergman, also a former ATI employee said that as part of the Greater AMD, convergence was the name of the game.

One marketing employee here in Tunisia spent much of his time ruthlessly purging anyone wearing an ATI logo on his or her shirt. This caused a certain amount of disgruntlement amongst a few diehards, but most just swallowed their pride and became part of what Bergman described as the Greater AMD.

Next up were technical presentations on some future announcement AMD will make about chips which are under embargo and or NDA, so we had to make our excuses and left them to it. ...

and for Gstanfor:
So far the celebrity of the show is Richard Huddy, ex-Nvidia and now ex-ATI and very much an AMD corporate player. He belted out a message, in front of the vast and very impressive Ministry of the Interior Building which veered wildly between the risque and the ribald. His talk amused the journalists so much that they applauded - we're sure you'll agree this is an ATI Radeon First

Why am I not the slightest bit surprised?

Any word on what Baumann was up to? Most likely chairing the Focus group meeting and preaching how nvidia's Dx10 implimentation is non compliant and illegal if I had to guess...

You'd think if they had some amazing products to announce they'd make that the focus of the entire event and be talking a ton about them and drumming up interest in them... :(

When asking about the r600, you might as well ask when the end of the world is coming, or when Duke Nukem Forever will be released. Oh yeah, right... "when it's done."

It's not vaporware.

Don't forget, AMD "could ship R600 today". If that's true then it MUST exist.

I've given in. You guys have drawn me into the hate camp. :(

Where's my pitchfork and torch, and what time do we march on the AMD castle?

Honestly, I've given up hope on ATI.

Maybe NDA ends on the 23rd, Tunis, Tunisia time. Which in that case is in 20min or so. So they can report on the 24th? I guess it gets here when it gets here, but there was several products to be launched as well, like a new AMD chipset and maybe Barcelona?

I'm sure all the websites are liking the hit counter readings

Wow.

I am on pretty long cycle compared to some of you hardcore enthusiasts (my pattern was from a (9600XT ->to 6800GT only because of an irrefutable deal -> to 7900GS was going to wait the 9600XT out to PCI-e, but friend offered me a good deal on the GT), so I am not too concerned about DX10, as it will be a a couple years before I jump. Reading about this stuff was still fun though, and it makes me worry about what AMD has in mind for their new investment. Perhaps they have become so obsessed with beating Intel in the server market they have forgotten discrete GPU gamers entirely? I can't see this happening in the ranks of ATi, or why AMD would leave even a mediocre market open for monopoly like that.

I have to say, its sad that we're waiting patiently for ANYTHING. You'd think that they would want to give us a teaser, just to keep us from goin nuts. I have an AMD system now, and a spare chip lying around, but as of today, if I build a system, its an intel system (as I'm sure most everyone else does). With the graphics cards, lord only knows.... We all know nvidia will bring out some nasty drivers they have that fixes 90% of the problems (and if they dont, I dont know how ATI can have perfect drivers as everyones system is different, and nvidia is still working on fixing their bugs).

In either case, I'm waitin for some kind of word in the "on the fence camp" sharpening my pitchfork if this ends up bein crap.

Applied Materials rumoured to want to buy AMD

ONE OF THE HOT rumours floating around is over the sale of AMD. No, not the PE one from last week. This one has Applied Materials (AMAT) buying the firm out. Now, wouldn't that be interesting?

Both AMD and AMAT have denied it vigorously with a confused 'no comment', but we were not expecting anything more. The tie-up makes a bit of snese, and if true, and it is only a rumour right now, it may portend a falling out between AMAT and Intel.

Keep an eye on both companies in the coming weeks, this one has more depth than the usual ones.

OK ... sure

:p

^This^ is the info coming out of Tunis?

i have one for you:

AMD is setting up its worldwide HQ in Tunis

--CPU/GPUs will be produced in Africa

I know that everyone has a predisposed distrust of TheInq lately, but I have to disagree that it would be "interesting".

Definitely worth keeping an eye on, but if we can learn anything from the telecom industry, it is that huge conglomerates are a bad thing, and I guarantee the federal government will not get involved this time.
