theInq didn't create this rumour

they reported it as "going around" at the launch

and would it be a "hostile" takeover ... a buyout .. a fire-sale ... acquisition ... merger ?
pick one .. speculation ... now

Applied Materials rumoured to want to buy AMD

ONE OF THE HOT rumours floating around is over the sale of AMD. No, not the PE one from last week. This one has Applied Materials (AMAT) buying the firm out. Now, wouldn't that be interesting?

Both AMD and AMAT have denied it vigorously with a confused 'no comment', but we were not expecting anything more. The tie-up makes a bit of snese, and if true, and it is only a rumour right now, it may portend a falling out between AMAT and Intel.

Keep an eye on both companies in the coming weeks, this one has more depth than the usual ones.

OK ... sure

:p

^This^ is the info coming out of Tunis?

i have one for you:

AMD is setting up its worldwide HQ in Tunis

--CPU/GPUs will be produced in Africa

Is AMAT a big company?

That would be an interesting acquisistion. Applied Materials would be best known in the GPU world for their infamous "Black Diamond" Low-K process they licenced to TSMC and nvidia based NV30 on (and had to go back to FSG at the last minute to get any production at all).

given shareholder and consumer sentiment toward AMD at present I'm guessing "fire sale" to be the appropriate option here.

We all hope that ATi started this product with the idea that noise and heat make a big impact on quality.

Do you understand the difference between MSRP and street price? The GTS has a $500 MSRP, but sells closer to $400 street. Just like virtually every card in existence, street is lower than MSRP.

A resolution of 1280x1024 won't tell you much of anything with this class of card - even less if no AF/AA are employed, also 165.01 is slightly faster than 158.19 so some (slight) handicapping there also.

yup this need 1920x1200 and 4x4 SSAA (does ATI even have SSAA) to really shine.
