there was once a time, many years ago, when we could have meaningful discussion here but clearly that ship has sailed.

I think she left port a couple years ago. :(

seriously, i can barely remember what it was like before we had the super fanboys like apoppin and rollo.

eventually you just have to ignore the idiots. they seem to be multiplying though.

My X1900XTX kills the 2600XT according to the Hard Spell benches.

Edit- also the NDA for the whole ATI lineup sounds like the 2nd half of May, and will be a hard launch.

Oh no! Looks like the 8600GTS beats the HD2600XT according to the hard spell benches.

Here's hoping to the success of the radeon HD series

The $400 xt is looking like the card I'm going to buy for my build in the next 2-4 months.

I am sorry, but I just find that funny coming from you. You seem to have one of the biggest flamethrowers around here. Don't be a hypocrite.

Come on AMD. Yu ra ra, AMD, yu ra ra, you can do it, yu ra ra, we believe in you.......
LOL. By the time AMD actually gets around to doing it will anyone even care if they can or not? Everyone else will be busy doing something else.

They may just be wrong about that timeframe but they are going to the Tunisa dealio. Come on AMD. Yu ra ra, AMD, yu ra ra, you can do it, yu ra ra, we believe in you.......

from the article:
Friday, April 20, 2007 14:02

Culver City (CA) - At around this time tomorrow, we?ll be in the air on our way to Tunisia Africa for AMD?s R600 media event. AMD is sparing no expense for this press junket and, according to an AMD rep, have basically reserved the entire Sheraton Tunis Hotel for hundreds of media from around the world and ?few dozen? AMD executives and other employees.

AMD will be showing off their next-generation R600 graphics card for both desktops and mobile platforms. Most of the journalists should land sometime on April 22nd and the actual briefings will occur on the 23rd and 24th.

Unfortunately, you?ll have to wait for all the juicy technical details because the reporters have signed a non-disclosure agreement that forbids them to talk for several weeks. Of course that could prove difficult with hundreds of reporters in one spot. Maybe AMD will sic the lions and cheetahs on reporters who get out of line.

...

The actual launch of the card will happen late May early June.

this doesn't make *any sense*

launch *this* month ... but keep the details quiet for weeks

r600 better be *spectacular*

or AMD is finished

i like this letter to theinq it says what i dare not speculate:

What planet is AMD on?

Subject: Earth to AMD

Helloooo AMD are we on the same planet ?

AMD "lead" Intel ?

You must know something we don't because planetside those dumb gamers who used to be such AMD/ATI fanboys are all building Intel/nVidia systems as far as I can tell.

Its like using seaweed as a barometer, when its wet its raining, in the same way when world+dog are building Intel and not AMD, Intel are leading. I know its complicated but maybe they could use a calculator or something. Oh no, wait, they did and came out £661m short, maybe the battery is low ?

Reading the business speak jargon they spouted about the losses last quarter, you could grow your roses on it. It sounds like a cult has arisen in AMD, a cult that is living in yesteryear, believes in its own supremacy in denial of the stunningly obvious facts. These guys come across like they have their heads wedged firmly in the sand. They are resting on their laurels, dining on ashes, the bloody parrot is DEAD!

Its bad news for everyone because when Intel finally sink AMD's battleship we will all be out of pocket.

here's *hoping* for AMD's miracle

here i gotta disagree

this is *AMD's* culture, not ATi's

i believe ATi would have had r600 out the door in January IF they weren't 'acquired'
... a so-so competitor to the 8800 series .. win-some, lose-some

AMD wanted to *tinker* with it ... and evidently *has been* tinkering with it ...
we have a hybrid GPU coming
--whether "gamers" think it is *worth the wait* remains to be seen
[doubtful]

i think AMD was *dead wrong* no matter *how spectacular* their 'family' turns out to be

they broke the *number one* [or 2] Rule of business - TWICE ... with intel and now with nvidia
--if you have *something worthwhile* get it out to the buyers and fans

it is better than *nothing*

i think if they had *any sense* they could always have tinkered with r600's refresh and just made r600 a half-hearted launch

i don't think they have any brains left at the top :(
--they are mired back in '05 when they did and they *ruled*

i am *hoping* i am wrong and all of their schemes turn out to be "brilliant marketing"
- but i doubt it ... nothing shows it :p

i am *prepared* to be extremely disappointed with r600
--and still *hoping* for a miracle

at any rate the ^above^ is *my analysis*

i think we will know right away ... these journalists will not be allowed to break NDA but we will get their *impressions* of the r600 family and what they think of it ... next week

read between their lines ;)

Can't agree apoppin. I think Barcelona will turn out OK (not brilliant mind you - merely OK compared to Intels products - it will be no repeat of the brilliance k7/k8 showed, more a K6-2 hang in there product). I very much doubt R600 will be so fortunate. nvidia took ATi completely by surprise with G80 - I think they are still trying to extract personnel from the ceiling (you would have thought that nv40 would have been warning enough of just how rapidly nvidia can move in an unexpected direction, but, apparently it wasn't).

nope, everything i read tells me intel is ready ... and they won't return AMD's favour in 04-06 when AMD sat on its ass ane let intel catch up and surpass them ... intel is evil .. they plan to destroy AMD

they are gonna steamroll barcelona
[unfortunately ... amd can only 'hang on' for their belated die-shrinks]

but you miss my main point to answer your previous one

this is AMD's *culture* ... not ATi's
...
ATi is so gone :p

Remember AMD allowed ATi to pretty much do their own thing with regard to R600. I'd say that up until extremely recently ATi has remained very much in control of their division (at least as far as R6xx is concerned).

that is amd's "story" .. no employee layoffs, either

haven't you been keeping up with the "latest" ?
:Q

i think ATi would have shipped it in Jan - as 'was'
. . . supposedly the r600 has undergone a *transformation* ...

-- i don't think it will mean jack to gamers
-but maybe

and i think r600 is a *symptom* of a much deeper problem within AMD that extends to Barcelona ...

AMD lost their focus and "direction" in their sudden "philosophy change" to Fusion ... and you can't run a ship without direction :p

not if you have aggressive competitors

You should have bolded and taken note of the four words directly preceding the ones you *did* bold apoppin. I pointed toward employee layoffs before xmas. It took until Easter for them to happen. Perhaps Ortons "management" was just too way out, even for Ruiz in the finish?

Also did you notice this statement by Ruiz from the conference call?
Through the acquisition of ATI, we now have a perspective into a very asset light model that we are pretty excited about learning more and more about it. When we look at all these things, we see a tremendous opportunity for us to really do something different going forward
I'm sure it will be, uh, different...

LoL

... sorry ... but i can't HELP but pointing out the obvious ...
[which AMD appears to have been trying to obfuscate by using many many words]

If AMD's launch tanks, I give you permission to go on a hating rampage. But not until then.

i already said i *will* withhold final judgment until then

i am just preparing ... as there are so few apparent choices

and my 'rant' will pale in comparison to the disappointed AMD fans' rampage

--IF it *tanks*
