Well, I tried to go from a 9600GT to a 4850 when I got in on the $150 Best Buy deal at launch week. But even once I got the temps under control I couldn't play WoW smoothly. Lots of jerkiness and occassional hardlocks forced me to return the 4850 and go back to the 9600GT (which played it just fine at max everything).

I have tried ATi cards off and on over the last several years (9800 Pro was great, x1900gt was good while it lasted) but the 4850 just didn't work for me. Went to an 8800GTS 512MB next and now use a GTX 260. Recently I'm buying only nVidia because their cards fold better than ATi.

you did reinstall the OS, drivers and the game from scratch when you switched to ati right?

I have to say as a IT tech.....that is WAY OTT as far as I'm concerned for changing a damn video game.....O\S rebuild?...you are seriously having a laugh...!

Agreed. To test the HD4850 I uninstalled NVIDIA drivers in the CP, rebooted, then booted to safe mode and used Driversweeper.

A reinstallation of OS is not necessary to switch video cards, never has been.

Yes, I'm thinking we'll have a refresh from ATi and nVidia by Christmas but honestly, I got tired of waiting so I caved and got a GTX260+.

I'm happy; it's almost as fast as a GTX280, plus I only paid half of what I paid for my 8800 GTS 640 MB (at launch) or 8800 Ultra (a few months after launch).

There is nothing metaphysical with total and complete non-support by a vendor. With consumer ATi cards, you have always been forced to use generic Windows graphics drivers on NT server. There is no "luck" for some people...every single one of them meet the same fate: you go FireGL, or you go somewhere else.

But you're using consumer cards on NT server. I personally would't be that dumbfounded if things don't work well with that arragement.

Details are still sketchy but the latest rumors put the refresh as arriving in early December with a 50% power reduction over the existing 65 nm cores.

http://theovalich.wordpress.co...90-and-quadro-fx-5800/

I am not sure of the truth of the above rumors. The power saving i think will be less, perhaps 20%, they will try for more core clock up to 700mhz maybe. The second article is also slightly wrong, the tesla cx that came before the fx was also a 55nm chip, for some reason nobody much noticed.

Read that nvidia did a production run of the telsa version of GT206 awhile back. They are slightly different apparently targeted for more reliability, less performance. After that was finished they were supposed to start production runs on the consumer cards.

According to charlie the latest consumer card spin didn't meet target for some reason and will need to be redone pushing cards out to february. Other people seem to be thinking it went alright and the consumer chips will be released prior to christmas. People are weighing to much on the words of the recent conference call, there were stories towards the end of october to make numbers nvidia was forcing suppliers into taking orders of larger orders than they wanted of GTX280s which they will have sell first.

No engineering samples or working GT206 cards appear to have sighted anywhere yet suggesting it is either a limited or slipstream release or that the final product wont come to at least mid december. The GX2 if it exists will likely take a month longer to come out.

In a brighter note, it seems pretty a definite product for nvidia before christmas is the 3d stereo glasses.

*Sigh*. Hopefully it will be here early december. \wait

Heh this thread grew a life of its own over the weekend ;)

With "Done with ATi again" in the title I was sure this would get locked once the usual boys get locked into a green vs. red argument. It has lasted longer than the previous two "When are the new Nvidia cards coming" threads. Impressive.

In before lock.

sure it is metaphysical; otherwise there is no logical explanation for what is posted here by otherwise relatively sane posters

what you say about ATi, the other camp says the same exact thing about Nvidia and their lack of support .. for basic things like 'centered timings' - for gamers!!
- Nvidia's CP is an ancient mess to ATi guys

We've had to clean out 3 trolls from this thread so far, and the original topic has long since been lost. Let's call it a day, shall we?
